D1: Ashin's Commission (El Jefe judging)

Hulgyr frowns and takes his horse somewhat closer to the front of the line "Did you say ants? Why we stop for ants?"
Hulgyr peers ahead in the direction that Mikal points at.

--- BAINLUNDER HILLS ---

"Big ones," Mikal responds with a grin. "See, up ahead about 250-260 yards. To the right of those three trees."

Through the gloom of the rain, there is a lump. It looks much like one of the boulders the Hills are strewn with. But a more careful inspection reveals it to be the carcass of some animal. Something appears out of the gloom near it. Something moves behind it. The things are about 3-4 feet high, and maybe 6 feet long. They could be a dog, except that the tail is as big as the rest of its body, and it is all spindly. Like a skeleton dog.

"On their own they ain't that much of a problem. But if there is a gang working the carcass, then there is likely to be some warrior ants as well. And they are really aggressive.

"Safest thing would be to work away around. Give them a wide berth."

"If they are aggressive, then they are a menace to the local people. If they are a menace, then they should be destroyed."

"Hulgyr says leave the ants be. This is thier land."

ooc: Doghead, i posted that Hulgyr would examine the breastplate at the cave, together with the rest before they left the cave. Did he find any clues about it being more than an ordinary breastplate? I also tried to find a club or, if possible, a greatclub. Did i find either?

"If they are truly so aggressive as the mortals said, then it is only a matter of time before they breed and spread their domain to a place where sentient mortals make their homes, killing all they find with their deadly acidic stingers. Surely this does not seem a good scenario?"

"No, they are surely not evil, but they are a dangerous mindless menace nonetheless. As vermin, they have no minds, unlike animals, which can think and be reasoned with. Vermin cannot be reasoned with. They continue to kill until they are sated and then move on, like a locust plague that devours all the farmer's crops. Only this plague is fairly powerful. You could probably kill a soldier with a well-placed greataxe swing, but your typical mortal would die instantly to an acidic sting, and they always come in large numbers, whole colonies that spawn at an alarming rate from a bloated queen somewhere deep beneath the surface. If the ant colony spreads far enough to come into contact with a town, the town will be annihilated."

Overwhelmed by Zaeryl's horrid scanrio's of ants taking over whole villages he looks around with a somewhat panicked look on his face "But.. Then.. Whole colonies.. annihalate entire town... instanly die.. We must kill the ants before it is too late!!! " With that said Hulgyr kicks his spurs in the side of his horse and charges off to the ants, readying a javelin on the way. In the distance you can hear him yell "Die ants! You will never kill my town!"

"Well, that might not happen for a while, though. It all depends on their relative rate of reproduction and how easily they can gather food..." Zaeryl trails off when it is clear that Hulgyr has charged on ahead.

'Ah well. These vermin will provide life energy as well as anything else.'

Immediately on hearing that the Ants might offer some threat, Ironwolf quietly draws forth his Falchion. However, when Hulgyr takes off toward the ants, he calls for caution:

"Hulgyr! Wait! We should stick together, and I'm not much for fighting from Horseback."

He slips off his horse, and starts lumbering after Hulgyr, hoping his companion will slow, fearing he won't. As he walks, he swells to a height of 10' tall (Expansion, duration increased to 30 minutes, 3 pp) and in quick succession raises a force shield (+4 AC, 3 minutes) to ward off any attacks the ants may make.

Once this is accomplished, if Hugyr hasn't waited for him, Ironwolf will break into a run in an effort to catch up.
