d20 modern campaign report

Well, last night we rolled-up 3 of the 4 PC's...

One planed to be a boxer, and another his bodyguard. After creation, they
finally dropped their concepts and went for full military types both
*sigh*.... I won't hold a gruge for that beacuse A) non-lethal damage is
lame in D20 and, B) I intend to make this campaign pretty bloody, so they
will need all the firepower they can get.

I've heard this alot. But then, from actual games I have read about, it seems the nonlethal damage is a lot more potent than people think it is on paper, and that the guns miss a lot more often than people expected due to high defenses.

I think it is time for a duel! I think we should run a mid-level brawler against a mid-level shooter some time in a short email or irc game, and see how it goes. I'm guessing that, if the two parties can manage to close with each other, the brawler will win.

because the PCs Wealth modifiers were so low, purchase DCs were a hot topic -- did you have the same issues Trainz?

Oh yes indeed.

They basically bought licenses for weapons and a demolition kit, but have no weapons and no armor.

My fourth player just rolled his character, a german academician that knows 8 languages (smart hero, Linguist Talent). I was very glad of that because knowing a certain language (which he picked) will be so vital to the first game session to avoid an instant TPK.

Hey Trainz-

I think we must share a gamer or two... I also have an Extreme Sports athlete in my starting group, and I elected to disallow the scizophrenic. We'll be starting with a newly graduated med student (Smart w/ Doctor background), the extreme guy (Fast), a cocaine addicted photojournalist (Charismatic) and a wealthy British private investigator (Dedicated). The other two are likely to be a philanthropic martial arts instructor (Strong) and a nightclub doorman (Tough). They will be starting with no espionage connections whatsoever... just average citizens in over their heads...

I haven't used d20 Modern yet, but it'll be a great resource for one-shot adventures and the 'chang-of-pace' episode I have planned, as suggested in the Dragon #293 article Stay Tuned...

You can have the Charismatic and Personality classes for 'the actors that play our heroes'.
Just to take a break from regular D&D, the 'crew' of the 'series' are attending a Sci-Fi Convention, and ... wi3rd stuff happens.

Another 'Modern' twist would be in-game gaming, or competitor PC's in a Magic Tourney. :D
Fun? I thought so.

Oh maii gawd !

Just finished our first d20M game. It was just absolutely awesome. Granted, the roleplaying itself from my players was close to pure genious, but the system itself... man.

I had such a blast. Everybody enjoyed it so much, it was like going back to the 80's, when playing a RPG felt like magic. I haven't had that feeling in years !

Anyways, let me just say that all my expectations where blasted-off. Action, player synergy, intrigue, horror, fantastic elements (and the players reaction to those fantastic elements)... the game just played itself. I love D&D, but d20M goes so much smoother, the drift of the story is incredible.

The fact that there are so much less numbers to take into account (I'm thinking about all the buffings players in D&D do, and the immunity - couterspelling - dispelling - situational exceptions we are all used to from D&D) probably plays a big part in the enjoyment we had.

A BLAST !

Can't wait for next Thursday !

that's quite a complement!

what setting are you trying? any of the proposed setting in the rulebook (Shadowchasers, etc.), a combo or totally homebrew?

Something between Shadow Chasers and Urban Arcana (more toward Urban Arcana).

Last night, my game started in Buraydah, then Riyhad, (Saudi Arabia), and now they are on their way to Boston.

There where a few do-or-die situations that my players overcame. Was pur-ty cool.
