It wouldn't be that bad even if there was just wolf and worg...But then to add the DIRE version and Winter (ok, at least, winter wolves had a distinct attack form). What was TSR thinking back then?

...there's definitely room in a game with over 3,000 monsters for a handful of different monsters that are vaguely lupine, since wolves are, after all, one of the most potent icons of the "evil widerness" that exist in the Western zeitgeist.

Regular wolves. Giant savage wolves. Wolves that herald eternal frost. Wolves that are smarter than you.

This is not to say that they necessarily all need to go in one book, or even that a worg is different enough from a wolf to merit a separate entry, just that three wolf monsters aren't any more inherently nonsensical than, say, three different types of elf, or three unique varieties of dragons.

Yeah, and let's not forget the (in)famous Wolf-in-Sheep's-Clothing! :D

Ooh, quoting:

Before Lurkalot loses money betting on worgs, I'll confirm that the picture is a guulvorg (a Huge variant of the worg), and that the worg looks different from that.

05/05: Worg

Very cool picture... but that is not a Worg.

It is far too removed from a wolf for me to accept it as such. Besides, how the hell do goblins ride such a creature with huge back-spikes?

In fact, looking at it again, the reptilian/mammilian blending makes this thing seem like it's lifted from the pages of Talislanta.

it's pretty, but the lightning is all wrong. Looks to me like the original picture didn't include the cave wall.

Not always. Also, "best" is very subjective when it comes to art.

This is true, but also untrue. If it were fully true, everyone would be successful artists, and their would be no knowledge to learn from the masters.

The kruthik... Some kind of Underdark spider monster. Never seen it before... Looks dangerous, however...

Oh man, Kruthiks were one of my least favorite monsters from the Miniatures Handbook. I hope their 4th edition incarnation is a little more inspiring, but I have to say that the picture isn't doing it for me.
