Damage types from DDM

FWIW 'Worlds and Monsters' mentions that necrotic energy from the Shadowfell is what animates undead, which may support my theory.

I don't think its the new energy drain; I think it is the new 'negative energy', like an inflict wounds spell.

I concur---removing the Positive and Negative Planes (Yay!) does leave a gap in the ol' lexicon.

Thunder is always sound. Without exception.
Yes, but thunder is also always the the direct result of lightning, without exception. That is the problem.

Once you name a damage type "Thunder", then you are limited to only using it in conjunction with Lightning attacks, or else your naming scheme falls apart.

Yeah. I prefer Sonic over Thunder as well. The name of the damage type is a meta-game priniciple anyway, so whether the name sounds "non-fantasy" or not is irrelevant. The name "sonic" already has a descriptive frame of reference for a damage type in the game.

Eh, not when you have spells that have "sonic" in the name. And then when you have characters mention these things in character, it is annoying to stop and think of what your character would say instead of "sonic". So, like most players, you just shrug and keep playing. So why not just drop what was a bad name to start with and pick something that sounds more at home in D&D, coming out of the mouth of a character or a player? Thunder sounds great.

Similes are acceptable in the English language, without exception.

hehe.

My dwarven warhammer makes sound like thunder when it hits. This spell makes a roar of thunder that rips into them. It is understandable that we are talking about a loud, booming sound in both.

It may not be perfect, but it sounds more at home in D&D than sonic, in spite of the fact that it can exist without lightning present.

Why does the word "sonic" sound out of place in the D&D world? It's not medieval Europe, its D&D with magic and worlds where (in some cases) modern real-world things are replicated with magic, and society evolved in a different way.

Unless you are saying that D&D personae are less evolved than real-world personae, or societies aren't as astute, then why wouldn't the mages/scribes/scholars of a D&D world not have coined the term sonic?
