Dark Sun in Dungeon #110

Darksun was the best ad&d world, and I aways hated the AD&D 2nd edition... I´m couting the day to have the darksun conversion and the expanded psionics handbook in my hands...

The problem with the Spelljammer mini-game (other than fugly art and bad rules) was that it wasn't Spelljammer. It shared some commonality with Spelljammer, but the changes made clearly make it a different setting. Spelljammer deserves better than the crap that made it into Polyhedron.

It's Spelljammer to me. Consider it a portion of that setting that has never been explored up until now. While the Rock of Bral could have a better choice for a Spelljammer mini-setting (of course, for a spacefaring fantasy game, "one rock" is not going to be enough, we need a system of planetSSS), all this phlogiston and crystal spheres are just unnecessary ornaments ... spoilers and fuzzy dice for a sports car.

In the same way that the Black and the Gray are window dressing for Dark Sun. :p

Different people will have different opinions about what constitutes the heart of a setting. I liked the Spelljammer minigame, myself, but obviously to some it didn't get the job done.

I don't mind the idea of a reimagining of some of the old game worlds, rather than a straight update of the mechanics. Star Frontiers, or Red Steel, or FREElancers...give one of these worlds to a talented creator, give them 50 pages in Polyhedron, and see what they can do.

Maybe Paizo will give a similar treatment to Planescape to tie in to the new book on the planes?

I'm eager for it. A straight 2e-3.5e conversion leaves me cold. It's something I learned when helping out with the PS3e conversion....if I want to play old-skool dark sun, I can do that without any help. Pick up my old 2e stuff, download a few books, and I'm off.

I want to play 3.5e, plus Dark Sun. Not Dark Sun Converted. I know I'm probably not in the majority, but that's also why I seperated from the PS3e team, and made my PS setting 1,000 years after the Faction War. Ditching most of the NPC's and the basic arragement of Sigil in PS would not be something a core conversion is capable of without great division, but it is something one dude on a site is capable of.

So I'm quite excited Dragon is reinterpreting the setting rather than just converting it. It's what I would have done with it. :)

EDIT: nevermind, James Ryman's site doesn't allow directly linking to pictures. Go to his site and check out the Fantasy Color section, scroll to the bottom and look for the 4 Dungeon pieces for other potential Dark Sun art (Last Stand, Elven Ranger, & Eli final).

The what and the what?

Actually I do have some idea on what the Black & the Gray are, but they were added into DS at a later point, unlike say crystal spheres & the phlogiston which were always a part of Spelljammer.
