Dark Tower 7 thoughts. (SPOILERS)

Flexor the Mighty!

18/100 Strength!
Hey all. I just finished the last Dark Tower book by King and am curious as to the thoughts of other fans of the series. Please don't post just to say how much King sucks or any non specific criticisms.

Anyway the ending of the series has me a bit unsettled. While I don't mind the idea that Roland climbs to the top of the tower and then the wheel of KA turns and deposits him back at the beginning becuase he didn't do the right things on his way to the Tower. Ka is a wheel and all that. Now he has the horn and hopefully he will blow it before the tower and find true peace instead of going back through the circle again.

But do you think that the entire cycle is repeated or is a new cycle with Roland begun? Will he find Jake, Eddie, & Susannah again or will he draw a new Ka-tet for this turn of the wheel? Was he just dropped back in time or just thrown back into the desert to chase the man in black anew. Since the Man in Black was killed is he born anew or is that another sign that Roland's prior attempts at the Tower are just erased and he starts anew back in time?

What did you think of the major characters deaths? I was bummed when Eddie got shot and killed, but thought it was fitting and handled decently. Gunslingers should die by the gun I think. Jake's death was ok as well. He died in the line of duty and saved the Beams in the process. Susannah leaving and quitting the quest was weak IMO. So she has a couple dreams when she is within days of arriving at what the Ka-tet bled and died to protect and ultimately find. So based on these she abandons Roland right before he is going to need her help. The alternate reality where she meets Eddie and his little brother Jake seemed tacked on and cheap IMO.

Flagg...he was taken out by a weak character after all the build up and hype that him and Roland would have a final meeting where Roland would finally attain justice for his land and family. Nope some crap character just introduced in this novel just takes over his mind and eats him. Flagg has been in King novels since the early 80's and he just gets written out like this. Lame.

Mordered - He's a big bad guy who kills Flagg but then dies by being shot twice while Oy is biting his knee. Of course he would have died anyway over food poisoning as it was. Lame again. He went out with a whimper and really didn't add much to the whole storyline that couldn't have been written better IMO. I didn't care about the character at all so when he died I was just glad he was gone and wouldn't waste any more pages.

And the Crimson King...a screaming old man who chucks grenades. Very weak. Why was he so bad ass in hindsight? Definately not the being introduced in Insominia. Patrick Danville's placing was total cheese and him just erasing the CK for Roland smacks of King running out of ideas on how to finish this.

I didn't mind King being in his story, but the whole thing just ran out of steam at the end and while the ending was fine, the events leading up to it and the details were not so satisfying.

Books 1-4 were amazing. Book 5 was pretty strong too. 6 was short but good. 7 was ok, but could have been so much more.

I totally agree with you on King's handling of the villains. That was my biggest problem with the book and what really left a sour taste in my mouth. When a story is built up over seven books, you expect big things from the climax, right? Too bad, we didn't get it. While I was somewhat disappointed with what Roland did find at the top of the Tower, it doesn't compare with my disappointment with the villains all going down like chumps.
