Never bought a box, but my son buys them occasionally, and I get one copy of any duplicates he gets, so I've amassed a fair (but sporadic) collection that way. We both use them for our respective D&D games. (He's in my campaign when he's here, and in a different campaign when he's at college, where he's the primary miniatures provider.)

I have bought one or two individual minis from my FLGS, though - I couldn't pass up a grell for two bucks when I wanted to run "Pakalillir" from Dungeon magazine, for example, and I bought a timber wolf for a buck as a gift to the 10-year-old who plays a ranger in our game after his PC got a wolf animal companion.

I bought 6-7 packs a couple years or more ago for use in my games, and when I went back home last summer, I bought about 40 or so guys that looked like adventurers as singles (commons and uncommons) Since then I have bought none, though I'd live to find a shop that has some dragonborn, once the giants one come out. That race is not represented in my 120 or so mini collection.

I bought the Harbinger starter set and a Dragoneye booster pack in the same purchase. All of the minis are still in the little plastic bags. The bags are in the original boxes. I've never used them. I never want to use them. I got too spoiled with nice minis and my own paint jobs.

If I need something special, I'll get something close from Reaper or better yet GW and convert it into what I want. If nothing else, I'll sculpt what I want.

I do not have the time or inclination to paint miniatures. Besides, D&D Minis is much more likely to have an individual odd, D&D-only monster than other companies. Where else am I going to find an ettercap, a galeb duhr, or an ice devil?

Played up through Giants of Legend, then moved away from opponents. Since then, I just use them for D&D. I buy 4-6 boxes of each new set, then trade or buy singles if I find it really necessary to own something or just because it looks cool.

I've collected every set through Dungeons of Dread. I played heavily until the new version of the game was released, at which point I tried it (and dropped it like a radioactive turd).

Against the Giants will be the first set I will not fully collect, though Dungeons of Dread saw about a 30 percent decline in my average per-set spending.

I use the minis extensively in three separate D&D campaigns.

Plastic minis? No thanks. I love my collected old lead -- c. 700 figs from the '70's & '80's Grenadier, Heritage, Citadel, & Ral Partha. Guess what? They still work.
