Destroying Magical Items with Area Spells

Any rules gurus out there that can give specifics about when/how magical items get destroyed? The rules for attacking a weapon (via sunder) or item seem fairly clear when you're talking about melee combat . But is a characters cloak/dagger/boots/etc all going to fry if they are caught inside the radius of a fireball when it goes off? Does EQ take damage in exactly the same manner as PCs do (taking into account item hardness)? It seems to me that as PCs go up in levels it would become increasingly hard for them to retain their equipment. Any thoughts as well as specific examples are welcome.

With area effect spells, items only have a chance of being destroyed if the person rolls a nat 1. THis is discussed in the DMG under saving throws I believe.
