Detect Magic

Could someone help me with a few pointers on how to use the Detect Magic spell?
Let´s use a +1 Longsword as an example. According to PHB p. 193, if you concentrate on the spell Detect Magic for three rounds you will detect that the sword is magic and the strenght of its aura. Spellcraft check determines the school of magic.

DMG p. 175 states that a magic item with no spell prerequisities (such as the +1 longsword right?) would detect as "Invocation" if its a weapon or offensive item. What is Invocation? Evocation? Im confused.
What would the Spellcraft DC be to determine the school of magic in this case?

Am I the only one who finds this a bit confusing and tedious work?

Yes, it is supposed to be evocation. Invocation is a mental leftover from earlier editions. This is in the errata, I am certain.

The DC is 15+ half caster level (as it is not a spell effect), according to the spellcraft skill description in the PHB.
The caster level for a +1 magical weapon is three times the enhancement bonus (DMG, Creating Weapons, p.244).
Which leaves us with a DC of 16.

Yes, it is a bit tedious and confusing. ;)
