Diablo 3 - What's Going On?

Funny thing, taste. I love the Monk and Wizard (hated the D2 Sorceress). The Witch Doctor annoyed me. And, as much as I wanted to love it, the Demon Hunter felt so painfully weak, to me. The Barbarian was okay, but I like the Monk enough better that I went with that for a melee character.
as I already suspected, my preferences also changed a bit after getting to Nightmare difficulty:

The Demon Hunter is actually the only class I'm already having difficulties with. I think it's because it's the only class without access to permanent damage reduction. I gave her the best equipment I found and she has the highest dps but I keep dying 'a lot' (i.e. once or twice each Act).

The Witch Doctor is still going strong, and both the Monk and Wizard are doing well. The Wizard later gains a lot of good long-lasting buffs, allowing him to compete with the Witch Doctor.

The Barbarian is also starting to worry me; you really need to pack a lot of self-healing to continue having fun with him - the monk clearly doesn't share that problem.

I've also found that finding a key piece of equipment (like a nice Legendary) can change your play experience a lot.

All the other classes have some sort of damage reduction as a class feature?

So... do you have some you want to give away?

Monks and Barbs have 30% DR innately, in addition to a couple DR passives. Witch Doctors and Wizards have a DR passive, I believe.
Exactly.
I've now arrived in Act3 Nightmare and have found a 'build' for the Demon Hunter that works well for me:
I'm using Evasive Fire as my Standard Attack and augment it with Tactical Advantage to gain a hefty movement boost.

The DH now plays completely different from the other classes, but I consider that a good thing.

I also have to say, I love that you can change your skills anytime without cost. Otherwise it would be very hard to get rid of builds that now longer work in higher difficulties.

I'm using Marked for Death (with Contagion) as my primary and Evasive Fire as my secondary.

I like that the right-click attack doesn't require me to hold Shift to avoid closing with enemies. Also, any enemy that just happens to get in the way of my movement now has a death sentence. Marked for Death is cheap enough to not sweat it, especially when it becomes self-perpetuating.

Agreed on both parts. My earlier discontent with the Demon Hunter was put to rest by being able to tap into exactly the skills I wanted to use -- absolutely none of the keys are mapped to a default type. Meanwhile, the Monk got boring because I haven't found any benefit to rearranging the key placement.

I never did get into the D2 Sorceress. I think a good portion of why is due to the need to "lock in" lower level powers and the knowledge that I'd never be able to be really good at what I wanted without totally sacrificing on the front end. Hmm... kinda live 1e magic-user.

All of the classes have skills that can help defensively/evasively, but D3 requires you to play more tactically than D2 did.
That begs the question; Is the game properly balanced where dying results from being incautious, or does the RNG occasionally spawn mobs that will massacre characters without warning? I ask because I've heard conversations that make it sound like death is expected in D3 and the repair costs are a major factor in character upkeep.
