You youngsters don't seem to realize that nostalgia *isn't* the reason we oldtimers play OD&D/AD&D.
Oh, apart from the fact that I've already seen my share of years, I didn't want to imply any reasons for anyone else than myself in my post :). That's why I tried to use "I" and "you" where it seemed approprate ;). This said, I find it nice that some people still play those old games :).

Diaglo,

A few more questions:
1. do you use minis for combat resolution?
2. If I recall correctly from the story hour you are using the three core books, Greyhawk, Blackmoor, Eldritch Wizardry and some stuff from the Strategic Review, please confirm?
3. House rules - how do you handle these?

1. Yes. But I came from the wargame side. So it was something I've always done. Used to use a string, compass, ruler/yardstick/tape measure too before. But now i mostly use a battlemap.

2. yes. also converted material from other sources for use.

3. let the players know ahead of time or as they encounter them. example... before play began i posted a document to our group site with the rules they needed to make a character. included were rules that would be considered "house rules". -10 = dead instead of 0 = dead by RAW.

You could play a balrog. That was pretty cool.
yup. but you'd have to work it out with your referee to make sure it fit the campaign and the group.

a Chaotic balrog joining a group of Lawful clerics might be a very, very, very short campaign

But a spectacular one!

Johnny Freedom, it is always nice to hear from someone who posts infrequently, but since you've been registered for over a year I hope you should know that when a moderator has asked that people steer away from edition comparisons, we really would like you to do that.

Now, would you like to edit your post, before anyone else decides to take offense at the way their favourite system is characterised?

Regards

Why would anyone take offense? I think it's you who has. Leave the poor guy alone, Mr. 6 grand.

How is Johhny's post any worse than some of the other crap in this thread? It seems it's okay to bash editions, as long as it's not 3rd edition.

I for one, agree with every word he said.

Let me guess: It came after the moderator's warning not to post any edition comparisons instead of before the warning, like the others ;)?

Did that balrog somehow advance in level during the campaign? How strong was it compared to other classes at the beginning?

Does anyone know where I might be able to find a copy of OD&D? Reading this thread has piqued my interest and I wouldn't mind taking a shot at running such a campaign. The closest I have to it is the Basic and Expert sets (which together only allow you to advance to 14th level, IIRC).

EDIT: Nevermind, I just found it on abebooks.com.
