Discussion - General Discussion Thread '08

Lets see,Trouvere, thanks for the comparison paste there, very helpful as I've been really struggling with the sheer scale of EnWorld! As for the Lerrani, I'll scale it down considerably and probably break it into a number of forests. I am a big fan of vast primeval forests, as you can probably see, plus they fill out the map nicely... In bite sized chunks hopefully such things will be incongorous.I'm also going to put in the Earling map.Obviously its a LONG way from being finished, but I'll keep chipping away.

I tried making a world map last year. [1]

It got mixed reviews and eventually fell by the wayside, [2] but you might be able to garner some useful info from my attempt.

There are three pictures in this post. [3] The first is the source. The second has some points of reference, and is probably the most useful. The third you can ignore. =P

The second picture in [3] has two rectangles at the center; those are the smaller Orussus [4] and Earling [5] region maps. The black dots are important places in my Sojourn in Sairundan adventure. (See [1] for details.)

First off thanks for the mapping help Rae, I'm taking a break for a few days but it should definetly prove useful. If anything I'm learning a great deal about EnWorld's geography that I didn't know.

Secondly I'd like to ask if anyone is up for juding my "Ends Meat" adventure. It should not be a significant commitement as it is designed to be an extremely short bite sized adventure. Its also quite thoroughly planned out so in the extremely unlikely event that I am unable to continue for some reason it should be easy to finish.

Thirdly thank goodness I can post normally again.

On another note reading the LEW wiki I was somewhat horrified to find the following information...

The Orussus Guard prides itself on its response time. Each squad consists of five guards: four armed guards and a powerful wizard capable of teleportation magic to whisk the five to the location of the emergency. Joe, the bartender at the Red Dragon, has a method of magical communication with the guard. Their current record stands at thirty seconds, in response to a "duel" that took place outside of the Red Dragon Inn between the halfling Cain and the human wizard Calamar the Dark.

Which when coupled with this information...

That means the average number of active guards in the city is at any time would be 100, spread throughout the different guard towers.

Would seem to indicate that Orussus has in excess of twenty wizards of higher than 9th level operating in its guard! And for me this kills a huge proportion of Orussuss's possibilities as a play area. For me it would stretch credulity to have thieves guilds of any influence in Orussuss, unless those thieves guilds have their own powerful wizards, etc.

I would like to propose that the guard has one such wizard who is only utilized in real emergencies and whose primary purpose is to deal with PC brawls, etc.

Hmmm, well I think I am just going to effectively ignore it. My games will typically be running in the seedier districts of Orussus so I'll assume that events either have to take place in certain districts or be extremely high profile, etc., to draw the guards attention.

Is there a clear conclusion to this issue anywhere? My own would be a single high level wizard, it seems simpler and less disruptive. Afterall, if I were a Watchman I'd make damn sure it was important before pestering the Archmage Garion, or some such.

Incidently adventure judges please check you inboxes. I just sent my adventure proposal for the second part of "Ends Meat", "The Scum of Orussus".

There certainly have been plenty of adventures in Orussus featuring open battles in the streets, criminal gangs and so forth, and no sign of an omnipotent watch. So I think your "ignore it" plan has plenty of precedent.

The thread comes to the conclusion, "it actually never happened." The wiki is a misinterpretation of what turned out to be an OOC comment on how quickly the guards appeared. No teleportation required.

Don't have a judge yet for Darque Portal either. Of course, my judge from Darque Demesne hasn't been around to award DM points in the last couple months, so... :erm:
