The Witches Hypnotize (for level 3 or less does nothing while locking eyes with the Witch. DC 15 Cha save if loses eye lock to end) and the Bards fasinate ability (basically the same except level 4 and multi target!) seems horribly broken.

Pretty powerful for Level 1 PCs.

I know a Solo Boss is typically a bad idea but I was think oh a demon is the boss after some subtle hints through out the dungeon. Round 1 Witch Hypnos the demon (Vrock) and they curb stomp him no problem. Woo boss fight.

"Stupefied" does not mean paralyzed and immovable: I would absolutely rule that any attack that causes damage has a good chance to force movement and potentially break line of sight, triggering a new save. Plus it's a focus spell so the Witch has to re-roll every turn.

Yeah thats how I ruled it.

Right? It's a sweet game and was fun to play around with, but I'm being pulled back to my old-school games.

I think I had an itch for some character building theory craft and it's always interesting to dig in and see what makes a system tick. Some stuff I liked, but it was going to take work to really get there.

However I was having more fun a few months ago just creating stuff for SD, and I really do want to get this adventure on paper so that I can get it tested.

So yeah, I'm going to recreate a few of the Ancestry options in a more SD way, get my two incomplete classes finished, get this adventure or 2 (the summer one as well) done...yeah that's the goal now.

If I can get house renovation done.

I was thinking a bit more about their upcoming collaboration with Professor DM to expand the game to level 20. While I certainly have not played every single TTRPG ever and my experiences are only my own, I struggle to think of a D&D adjacent game where the gameplay experience is improved by reaching the higher experience levels.

Most of the time the decline in my enjoyment of the game starts around level 9 or so for a variety of reasons, whether it simply be my interest in the current characters having run its course or mechanical issues with the system being exposed. I think that's one of the strong appeals of Shadowdark to me, since the cap is level 10. I haven't experienced level 10 gameplay, but even just looking over the tier 5 spells and the more powerful magic items gives me a lot of confidence that the gameplay loop should hold up to that point.

Perhaps they can manage to thread the needle and come up with something that keeps Shadowdark fun and engaging all the way to 20, but IME history isn't on their side. That could just be a me thing though, either way it will be interesting to see what they come up with.
