Disintegrate

I was curious what happened to Trolls under 3.5 with disintegration, but I seem to have hit a bit of a bump. It's been converted to a damage spell (hmm). Nobody remembered to tell the guy writing the regeneration description, though.

It would appear that instant-death spells that now cause damage instead are thwarted by regeneration.

We don't even know what type of damage is caused by Disintegrate. Is it force damage? raw magical energy damage? secret voodoo damage?

The issue isn't discussed in the FAQ.

Changing flesh into dust... damage. It's a Transmutation spell afterall.

But the Flesh to Dust part only happens if the damage is sufficient to reduce the target to 0 hp or less...

Favour text... It's a transmutation spell:
Transmutation
Transmutation spells change the properties of some creature, thing, or condition.
WOTC didn't really think the consequences of surviving a partial disintegration... and living without some percentage of your skin... but I guess we all have to live in the abstract and say that nothing changes, unless you die, in which case everything changes. It just hurts if you survive it.

YMMV

Looks like the troll is killed if you can turn all of it into dust... otherwise it grows back.

That works for me. I just wish they had throught through their reworking of the spell.

Yes but if the magic deals non-lethal damage, then the troll can't be reduced below 0 hp, and thus, can't be killed with Disintegrate...

You're right ruleswise. But for me this falls clearly under that category "Screwed in 3.5 cause of overworked Wotzee dude".

If there is a finger left, the troll will regenerate. If it's just a pile of dust, nothing grows anymore.

I think I need to take a vacation from the Rules section, I prefer flavour to crunch. Ouch.
