why are thewy even discussing 5th edition? Its what, year 2 of 4e? Its silly to even discuss it as a designer.
Well, 4e began at 2005 when 3.5e was just 2 years.

Well, in the immediate context, because the interviewer asked, and saying "I can't talk about that" would be taken as evidence that they were in fact actively working on 5E right now. (It's kind of a no-win situation, really.)
In the context of discussion within WotC - it's inevitable that, as they bat around design ideas, some of them will turn out to be good ideas (or at least ideas worth pursuing), but impossible to implement within the current rules structure. Instead of simply throwing those ideas in the trash, the logical thing to do is make a "5E file" and stash them in there, to be revisited when the time comes.
I hope they are thinking about 5th Edition. I hope they are trying out new ideas, tweaking things, taking notes, improving their product, etc., because that is how businesses stay healthy and successful. Products have to evolve to stay relevant.
It's absurd to think that WotC would create a game system, and then take an 8-12 year break from development to bask in the glow of their accomplishment.
