Dislike 4E? You can write off 5E

Remember...

When you work for a game company, the first rule of game design & revision is..DON'T TALK ABOUT GAME DESIGN & REVISION!

why are thewy even discussing 5th edition? Its what, year 2 of 4e? Its silly to even discuss it as a designer.

Well, in the immediate context, because the interviewer asked, and saying "I can't talk about that" would be taken as evidence that they were in fact actively working on 5E right now. (It's kind of a no-win situation, really.)

In the context of discussion within WotC - it's inevitable that, as they bat around design ideas, some of them will turn out to be good ideas (or at least ideas worth pursuing), but impossible to implement within the current rules structure. Instead of simply throwing those ideas in the trash, the logical thing to do is make a "5E file" and stash them in there, to be revisited when the time comes.

Keep this in mind - Every new edition of D&D has been written by new designers. That in and of itself pretty much negates anything James Wyatt has to say on 5e since its doublful he will be involved with its design.

5e could be the same or it could be different. It's too early to tell.

"We're curently working on a suprising number of 4e products at the moment. Like the upcoming Dark Sun campaign and a few others we have in mind."

Deflection of the question wouldnt be a confirmation nor a rejection. But thats justme.

I hope they are thinking about 5th Edition. I hope they are trying out new ideas, tweaking things, taking notes, improving their product, etc., because that is how businesses stay healthy and successful. Products have to evolve to stay relevant.

It's absurd to think that WotC would create a game system, and then take an 8-12 year break from development to bask in the glow of their accomplishment.

To quote an older Broadway musical:

"Well, in all my years I ain't never heard, seen nor smelled an issue that was so dangerous it couldn't be talked about."

Agreed. As long as they don't come and say "If your sessions revolve around rituals, it's probably not as fun" :p (In reference to rituals which Wyatt wants to fix in 5e)
