DMG 2: yay or nay

Is the DMG 2 worth buying?

I saw it today on the shelf at Barnes and Noble and hadnt really previously looked at it. There seemed to be some pretty nifty information in it but the $40 pricetag was far too high for me to just buy it on the spot.

I read the review for it and the author spoke highly of it but that $40 tag is still pretty hefty. It has nifty things but I'm not sure that it's worth it as a whole.

Any thoughts?

It's really really useful. I like it a lot.

Then again, I get the majority of my books at a discount regardless.

$40? Get it on amazon. :)

I love it. Even the complete "fluff" like the Saltmarsh section is full of useful goodies.

By the way... looks like we're getting a Player's Handbook II in May 2006. Someone posted the amazon.com link at the WotC forums.

Eh. It's alright. It's got some good stuff in it, but nothing that makes me suggest you jump at the bit to get it. Try to buy it at a discount, certainly.

Demiurge out.

Well, here's some praise for it:

I rarely buy anything other than the core books. I have the core three for D&D, the core d20Modern book, the Grim Tales core, etc etc.

I'm sorely tempted to buy this book. There seems to be enough random stuff in it that I like, including the section I like to call: "Workplace Psychology for Gamers", swarm rules for bigger creatures, business rules, etc etc. There's alot of stuff I DON'T like in there ... like the "Spirit" rules where the party attracts some funky spirit that gives them a bunch of powers ... bleh bleh bleh. But on the other hand, the teamwork talents are GENIUS. Really like those.

But it's pretty much impossible for me to walk into a store and buy something. Ask my wife. I'm weird about purchases and I'll "go visit" something half a dozen times before I buy it. Drives my wife up the freakin' wall.

But I'll get this. After we get to know one another for a while more. :)

I recommend it. I have been DMing for a couple of decades, and while it may not have told me a lot of new stuff, it reminded me of a lot of important things. Things I may never have bothered thinking about consciously (like gamer types and other "social aspect" issues). The stuff like mob rules and teamwork benefits are pretty nice, and I really like the magical event and locations stuff.
But then, I had a gift certificate, $40 is a lot.

Heap - your buying habits mirror mine and I like the DMGII. It's not amazing, but you will find it worth your while. From one core rules guy to another - I think you will dig it.
