Do failed spells cause "tingles"?

  • Yes. A target who successfully saves feels something, as per the RAW.

  • No. Forget the RAW, spells cast on the sly aren't usually noticed.

  • Something else. See below.

I think it gives much more flavour for the person to know that they have thrown 'something' off. I've occasionally played in games where the DM just says 'make a save' and then nothing happens - I find that frustrating, I want the flavour text, the story drama behind what is going on!

I always use that rule and like it a lot. It requires spellcasters, both PCs and NPCs, to think more carefully when using magic. A PC/NPC who can use, for example, Detect Thoughts at will would otherwise have no reason not to use it constantly, and would always be able to get through even the most strong-minded of targets, because everyone fails a save on a 1 and without the 'tingle,' the spellcaster can use the ability with impunity and never a chance of being detected.

Though for everybpdy worried about the poor Dopplegangers, note that Detect Thoughts is a supernatural ability for them, not a spell-like ability.

One could therefore rule (and I would) that it is not subject to the same limitation of being detected as a spell or spell-like ability would be.

The "tingle" is very important. If fact anything that is a limiting factor on the power of spellcasters is important to prevent them from totally taking over the game from fighter, rogues, etc.

I like it since it forces people to be careful with spell effects; using Detect THoughts all the time just because will get you detected, whereas using it carefully will usually work out.

As of this post, it is 37-0-2. I don't recall seeing such a conclusive poll on these boards before. :D
I was just thinking the same thing. I've been on ENWorld since Eric started it and I don't think I've ever seen it happen!

I think by default the RAW are fine, but a feat like the one above should be able to circumvent this.

I think perhaps the mechanics in the above feat are a little complex, though. Maybe it should just be an opposed roll - the caster makes a roll of d20 + Spellcraft vs. target Spot + d20, or something similar.

Guess I'm the minority again. :)

I play that there is no tinkle. You know if obvious spells have been cast (fireball is difficult to hide), but otherwise I play that charms and such aren't active saves so much as the spell is unable to effect your personality. I also enforce the component rules though, so if you're caught mumbling for no reason, reaching into a pouch (which is a whole different sort of threat), or waving your hands you get everyone's attention.

It sucks for the players when they're on the receiving end, but they enjoy the advantage when they get to use it.
