Do not buy anything from overstock.com

All I can say is I have done a LOT of business with overstock. Never any unsolved/unresolved problems. If you don't want your mom paying the restocking fee request a manager and ask why she is having to pay a restocking fee on a product they messed up on by sending it to her in the first place. They'll probably waive the fee. "Normal" customer service can't do that, it has to be a manager.

This is also the first time we have dealt with overstock.com, and the last. I can understand a restocking fee if the customer was not happywith the item, but when its the company screwing up, no restocking fee.

I think this time Ken has a point.

Yes absolutely he does. I was just teasing him a bit because he seems to have the worst luck buying online. Was not meant as a criticism on his part.

I don't think anyone would disagree with you on that. You really need to continue to escalate the issue with Overstock until you reach a level where someone has the authority to set it right.

Your best bet might be to contact them by phone...

Actually, we all have insufficient information. How LONG was it between when she got it, and when she is sending it back? I know at the computer place I worked at before, a full refund turns into a full refund w/restock fee turns into "take it next door to the used shop and see what they'll give you for it" depending on how long it has been.

Never ordered anything from Overstock, myself, but I am a fan of their commercials. ;)

I'm really surprised to hear about this - I've ordered multiple times from Overstock and have always had a good experience - good prices and never any shipping problems.

Sorry to hear about the bum luck!

I think that is actually one of the first complaints I have ever heard about overstock, actually.

Consider it two, then. I won't do business with 'em, either. I got a book from them a while back. They automatically signed me up for their Auctions site. The site was having a "drive" to get networks of "friends" set up. The gist of the program is that they make your email public and reward other Auctions members for petitioning you to join their networks. So, expect spam.

Okay, maybe I clicked on the wrong thing when I created my basic Overstock account. No big. I emailed customer service and explained that I really had no interest in their auctions, had never bought anything on an online auction, and had no plans to do so. Please cancel my Overstock Auctions account or, failing that, just keep my name off anything remotely public because I'd like to opt out. I was nice about it, etc. I even asked if there was a different email/dept. where I should direct my concerns.

Got a form letter back. It was obvious that the responder hadn't read past the first half of the first sentence. So, I wrote back with the "I have a problem" bit at the top. The response was pretty much gibberish that amounted to, "Sorry, you're screwed. You might as well buy stuff from our auctions site. Oh, and please spam others, too."

After a few volleys back and forth, I ended up posting a note on my "personal auctions page" that I wasn't participating in the friends program and customer service was being uncooperative about removing me. Please don't send me any email, or I will boycott your auctions on the off chance that I ever consider doing business on this pathetic site again, thankyouverymuch. That seems to have helped.

So, world-class crappy, patronizing customer service and actively encouraging spam. Yeah, I think it's a company that needs to be avoided. Even if it wasn't pretty much the worst service I'd received (and I've got some other doozies); the spam is enough reason, in my book, to avoid them.

Well for one, they are charging her a restocking fee for sending the laptop back. She just wanted the thing to work, she is old and just wants the thing to work. Due to someones incompendece at Overstock.com, she is dissapinted and has to go through the agravation of sending it back.

This is the reason the average consumer should shop for expensive items at average retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City, Gateway, etc.) or with big, well-supported companies (Dell, etc.). Shopping at places like Overstock and Ebay and Scopes is for those who know what they're doing, know what they're buying, and are willing to deal with hassle for a good deal.
