Quite so. This is exactly how Paladins operate, to my mind too. They are devoted to Good and to Law, absolutely, and without any specific need for a deity or anything else to assist - or otherwise affect - that devotion. If they coincidentally happen to follow a deity as well, fine. That shouldn't be a problem, generally speaking.
Since the cause itself is Lawful Good, a paladin may have patron deities, not as worship in themselves, but in so far that they are patrons also of lawful good and advance that cause.

First: They require a divine force or a god, not just fervent belief. They aren't psions.

Second: As lawful beings, paladins (no apostrophe) obey the rules of grammar.... :p

I had to vote several times. IMC, 90% of paladins are devoted to a god. Most of the rest are devoted to quasi-deities or celestial paragons. A very small minority are devoted to abstract principles of law and good but are still required to respect lawful good churches of all gods. I have found that paladins following a god creates more paths for character development and plot ties than the "loner" who is just lawful good with no affiliations. So I encourage all paladins in my campaigns to worship gods. Wee Jas is not allowed.
