D&D General do we need Character Abilities ?

le Redoutable

Ich bin El Glouglou :)
wouldn't it be good , if only Classes ( and Multiclass as a 3-Classes combo ) and Feats ( derived from Classes and their corresponding Multiclass ) etc
do the job ?

... and where do you localyze Cross-class skills and Out_Of_Class skills ?
( because a Cross-Class Skill is a skill which uses a Class outside of your Multiclass but in relation with a Class from your Multiclass :

example :
say your Multiclass ( that we could rename as Path if given need ) is
Fighter/Monk/Courtisan

and you want to gain a skill/special Ability etc from Illusionnist,
then you refer to
Fighter/Illusionnist/Ruler
and price is using the Cross-Class Table

while if you want a skill/s.a. from
Paladin/Ninja/Sorceror
you use the Out_Of_Class price

( C-C-S sould be double normal price, while O_O_C could well be four times normal price )

:)

Fighter/Monk/Courtisan
Fighter/Illusionnist/Ruler
Fighter/Bard/Sorceror
Ranger/Druid/Courtisan
Ranger/Merchant/Ruler
Ranger/Brute/Sorceror
Priest/Ninja/Courtisan
Priest/Merchant/Bard
Priest/Brute/Illusionnist
Hunter/Ninja/Ruler
Hunter/Druid/Bard
Hunter/Brute/Monk
Paladin/Ninja/Sorceror
Paladin/Druid/Illusionnist
Paladin/Merchant/Monk

we could use Races to gain Package Deals ( that is, a bargain for some skills/s.a. inherent to given Race )
then, also a Background for another Package Deal ...
:)

actually, I think Character Abilities are of Underground Usage:

by giving a High and Low value they let developers generate Races,
and grouped 2 by 2 they make for Classes
:)

but we don't need them ( or so, it's my recent work that intuits me to this direction )

:)

As they stand they make no sense at all, and there are too many of them.

Go Shadow of the Demon Lord and very few would have a stat above 15. Then make each tier of attribute more comic book - Athletic, Olympic, Peak, Superhuman etc.

Also each class has no access to magic unless picked as a feat, e.g. cantrips, chi, pact, training etc.

Edit: this would allow a berserker to gain Warp Spasms like in Slaine

If you want classes to remain, there should only be three core classes, Magic-User, Warrior and Rogue.

Str, Dex, Con etc labelled Abilities in the books ( call 'em Attributes , I am not susceptible lol )

Oh, right, I meant to type "Ability Scores" not "Attributes" (have been reading other RPGs lately.)

I just meant that you are referring to the six ability scores, not "abilities" in general, which would include class abilities, feats, etc.
