Do you cop flak for the shows you watch?

I hated Glee when it first came out, but if you pay attention to the episode forums, you see that I converted. But, I could care less what people think about what I watch, people watched the Rel Life, Pro Wrestling and American Idol and made them hits - frankly, that shows a decided lake of taste in my book for the populace at large, so throw stones, I have my own ammunition.

Hmm ... a few people I know give me hay for watching Dancing With the Stars. That's the only show I watch currently that anyone seems to disagree with. It used to be I caught flak for watching WWE wrestling, but they've all since moved to cable.

I usually just get uneasy silence when it comes out that I don't have a tv. It's not catching flak, per se, but it seems to limit the topics of idle chit chat. TV actually provides quite a good common point for strangers to relate to.

That's because people don't farm much anymore and talk about the weather. Call it a by-product of a digital/industrial society.

I have no objections -- nor necessarily problems -- talking to someone who doesn't own a TV. But that means you have a LOT more time to pick up a whole slew of other interests, and in general, if there isn't SOMETHING you do or are interested in that is easily accessible to most people ... then I'll start to have objections.

I've talked to people with no TV about movies, music, novels/literature, current events, the history of the city / state they live in, and of course, gaming.

(Edit: Oh, I love conversations about linguistics, too.)

I only worry about people that can't have a conversation about ANY of those. ;)

Oh, definitely. There's always something to talk about. It's just that the folks who don't watch TV have to linger in the background while the guys in the gathering go through the ritual of first accusing each other of, then tearfully admitting to, watching Desperate Housewives or somesuch, all while the women egg them on.

I'm the guy that'll be most comfortable talking after the fact about how that's such an interesting social phenomenon. Or linguistics is cool, too. :)
