Well..... i did do both but......but that was until i killed all my players who were at level 3 with an assasin vine......now i just play

You killed your players?!!?

You may have more problems than just not being DM anymore ;)

I play about 4 hours one week night and run for about 8-9 on the weekend. The weekend game goes for about 2-3 months then someone else runs 7th sea for a month or so. So I get to play and run a fair amount. No complaints from me but given a choice I would Run rather than play..

For over 15 years I've been basically the one, the only, DM, GM, Referee, Keeper, Computer, Storyteller et al for my groups.

I know of "players" by little more than association.

From 1980 until 4 months ago I only DMed.
But I have since found another group who already has a DM.
So now I DM one week and play the next.
Sometimes DM Saturday and play Sunday.
It has been a lot of fun to finally play without some of the DM work.
It has also made me a better DM because I now see the game from a players view and see how another person DM's a game.

I express my sympathies for those poor souls who do not get to both DM and play.

Each has its own rewards. Dm'ing is the ultimate expression of creativity, for those who never get to write their own novel, it is the closest thing to doing so, and the work is shared with the players, so you never are quite sure what the outcome of your story is going to be. Playing, on the other hand, is truly fun to both act on and react to situations the DM introduces to you.

I am glad to be in a group which has several players willing to share these duties. There was a time when I mainly DM'ed - and while fun, you will experience both a stifling of creativity, and general burnout. Seeing someone else's style for a while will give you much input on what someone does better than you, and how you can learn from these people.

Heck, I've learned many techniques just listening to the other DM's on this board! (A certain Mr. Kulp's story hour, for one.)

...And I say to any player who reads this board and doesn't get the urge to DM at least one campaign, I have to say:

"Whassah mattah wit' you???" :)
