One thing I find interesting here... I've always heard that lots of small meals, rather than a few full meals a day, is a good way to *build* weight.

It is. The body can only assimilate food so fast, so if you eat a lot at once, more of it is likely not to be assimilated by the body, ending in the toilets. With little snacks, the body doesn't have to work so hard to assimilate more of what it receives.

That's the same principle with water. When I competed, I took little sips, so they could be assimilated by the body very fast, keeping my muscles hydrated. If I had drunk a lot all at once, the water would have ended weighting on my stomach, then on my bladder.

On the other hand, if you are eating fewer calories than your body needs to sustain its current weight (dieting), eating many small meals means that your system is always getting food, so it never thinks you are starving it, so it won't go into starvation mode as easily.
As far as I can tell, more smaller meals is just a good idea all around, when trying to gain muscle or lose weight, or whatever.
The other thing I do to try to thin down is to drink a lot of water. Your system needs water to work properly, and most people don't get enough. I try to treat my body in a healthy way with a varied diet, and it's paying off 8 months later.
Note: As far as I can tell without trying it, the current 'protein power' or Adkins diet is highly suspect. The online research I've done, including testimonials from people who have tried them, indicates that:
1) They make you thin by making you unhealthy. A bout of flu will cause you to lose weight too, that doesn't mean I want one.
2) They are very hard to stick to long term. All kinds of people try them for a month, lose a bunch of weight, but then the cravings get too strong and they gain it all back.

By eating healthily I'm losing weight without cravings at all, and I'll be fine long term without any health concerns from my diet. I don't think the protein diets have had proven ill effects yet, but there's a lot of concern. Any diet that induces a named medical condition (ketosis) seems suspect to me.

I'm short, quite fat, balding on my head but scruffy all around, am blind without my glasses, and I could hardly see with them. I have red hair (what's left of it) and am heavily freckled.

Being asthmatic as a child has always kept me far away from any physical activity and as a child led me to seek fufillment with more imaginiative pursuits such as drawing, writing, and gaming.
