Do you remain Stealthed if you attack yourself?

Just out of total abject curiosity...

I know if you attack an enemy while Stealthed, you lose your Stealth (short of a power or feat that changes this).

What about if you target and hit yourself? What if you target yourself and miss?

Thanks!

I'd just like to start off by saying that you have posed a very strange question... :)

According to the rules compendium under remaining hidden:
Don't Attack: If the creature makes an attack, it doesn't remain hidden.
So it doesn't matter who you attack, it is the act of making an attack that breaks your stealth.

As a thought exercise, let's keep it simple - you drop an area attack that includes yourself as the only creature in the area (I don't know if you're allowed to make a melee or ranged or close attack with yourself as a target, but let's not worry about that part right now). Then yes, you would cease to be Hidden from any enemies you were previously Hidden from.

From the Compendium entry on Stealth:
Don’t Attack: If the creature makes an attack, it doesn’t remain hidden.

It doesn't say that you fail to remain hidden if you "make an attack on another creature" - just if you make an attack. Ergo, attack yourself -> you're no longer hidden.

Also, if you make an attack that includes NO targets (such as a Close or Area attack that hits a bunch of empty squares), that TOO would cause you to cease to be hidden.

This very thing came up a couple sessions ago in one of my groups - an area charm to attack yourself caught the invisible thief.

She was a very sad, very visible, shortly thereafter squished thief :)

I would have thought it depended upon what kind of attack you were making - raging battle axe attack on self, yes. Jab self with poison needle, perhaps not. Not straight away, anyway :)

Yep. You are unhidden after that attack.

Do not fret, for if it happens that the attack is one of those that goes on to make other attacks as part of the action then while you may not be hidden, you maintain the benefits until the entire action is complete. That means you are invisible, have CA, no one knows where you are...

Okay thanks guys - its the "any" attack part that clears it up.

The specific situation was my level20 Avenger, totally stealthed behind a lev26 solo elite something or the other at last night's session.

I started to attack myself with Temple of Brilliance (target - creature), not for the damage, which is smallish (and in fact I'd prob. miss myself - no double rolls on my self!), but the effect lasts until the EOTE, sustain minor.

I wound up not doing it because I was afraid it would reveal me. Was just making sure for any such scenario's in the future. :)

Thanks again! :)

Obviously, the logic is that D&D characters just can't resist going, "Ha-HA!" as they attack, thus giving away their positions. Even those stealthy, sneaky assassins shout with excitement as they strike - even when striking themselves. Silly characters.

You couldn't do that anyway Darklord, because you cannot gain the benefit of a powers effects or similar if the target isn't a significant threat (often called the "Bag of Rats" rule). Attacking yourself to get a powers effect is definitely under that provision.
