Dragon 300/Dungeon 95 sealed sections- Nessessary?

I think it's probably a pure marketing gimmick. And it will work. Nothing makes people interested in a topic more than telling them it's forbidden.

The prime example of this was that godawful book, The Satanic Verses, by Salman Rushdie. It would have faded into quick obscurity but for the 1 million dollar price on Rushdie's head that the Ayatollah declared. Suddenly everyone wanted to read this 'dangerous' book.

Hey, I read that a couple years back for highschool.

It was... something else.

It's not only a gimmick, it's meant to be an obvious one. It's "forbidden" knowledge, therefore make it more fobidden-esque by sealing the "forbidden" section.

The people at WotC...errrr...Paizo Publishing knwo that gamers aren't stupid, so they know that we know what they know, which is that it's just a gimmick.

OTOH, it likely will be as much for mature audiances as the BoVD is, so there is that warning on the cover, as there should be.

Nossir, I don't like the idea.

If they have "sealed sections" it makes me wonder how tasteless it will be. I didn't like the "gory halfling picture."

Dungeon just hiked the price. Then they go and add crap I have a strong suspicion that I won't like and won't use in the game.

Essentially, the issue to me is the same as if a substantial part of the magazine was devoted to FR. Sure many people will like it... but many others won't.

People who don't like the approach of the BovD can simply choose to not buy the BovD. When you are dealing with a subscription service where people have already paid, IMO you should REALLY stick to things with as broad as appeal as possible.

What's worse, in last Dragon, the edotorial replies to the mail said that they "got the message" that people didn't like all of the big promos in the Dragon. Apparently, they are talking the talk and not walking the walk, because look -- here's another promo issue.

Nosir, I don't like it.

I'm currently wading through Midnight's Children. I've reached the conclusion that the Ayatollah put the bounty on Rushdie not because the material was controversial, but because Rushdie is an incoherent writer and must be stopped from publishing another novel at all costs.

Aren't the magazine layouts and articles and whatnot pretty much scheduled out a few months ahead of time? If so, I imagine that it'll take a little time to see the shift, until they get the issues that are already scheduled out of the pipeline.
