[Dragon] Lord, the cheese...

Personally, I like the cover, and wouldn't mind a poster sided print of it. In my campaign, there is an alu-demon (half-fiend) NPC, whose forearms were mangled, then replaced with those of a dragon (a topaz, which also granted her the ability to breathe underwater). Aside from the inclusion of a tail, the image is spot on for her.

As for my kids seeing the cover, no big deal. They see more skin in an underwear commercial. My 4-year old daughter cackles like a madwoman, when the Joe Boxer guy dances around.

Oh the humanity! Not being able to read possibly offensive material at work! Where will it end, where will it end?!?

It's sad that you would rank "Choice of reading material." over "Providing for my family." on your list of priorities.

I believe I've already replied to this criticism. Can you say troll?

Too many companies have this incorrect belief that they own their employees just because they give them a paycheck. I've never tolerated that philosophy and I never will. There are at least two companies in the past 10 years that considered me an asset that I've left because they had the wrong approach to dealing with their employees. Specifically, one was because of mandatory meatings regularly called after hours or on days off with no more than a couple day's notice, and another was because of a generally hostile attitude towards all the employees by the management.

Personally, I generally choose to be respectful towards my co-workers, but aside from what the company must do to conform with law, I refuse to have any extra degree of "respect" imposed on me. I probably wouldn't read Maxim at work, but I believe I should have the right to do so on my time if that's what I choose to do. Monitoring reading material is just a way a company has of repressing their employees. I don't tolerate that.

FYI, I work for a company that was recently nominated as the best company to work for in Western Washington. One of my co-workers does read Maxim at his desk, and even keeps the past few issues on hand. I don't see it as a big deal.

The cover itself I suppose has two controversial issues to some people:

* the fact that there's a demon/devil on the cover. This worries some gamers that they will be labeled devil worshippers.

* the fact that there is a good looking girl on the cover who demonstrates some skin.

Censorship is not the answer of course. I can respect people for thinking that they don't want to expose themselves to anything so impure as the human form (take any Conan book cover for instance), but only if it's not just to argue the other side.

I just showed the cover to my wife and she said, "SO WHAT???"

Any other women or men care to chime in on this cover issue of Dragon?

There's always a lot of griping about art, especially when it comes to conservatives and art, but what about people who actually like classic fantasy artwork, such as: Salvador Dali, Goya, Rosseau, Delville, or J Holmes? How about modern fantasy artwork: does it belong on Dragon?

That's exactly the response I got.

Personally the only complaint I can think of is that they need to have an equal number of 'chainmail loincloth' men in the artwork. Otherwise they should feel free to show whatever amount of skin they want, with whatever level of sexuality they want. So long as every piece of artwork doesn't go that route, then I think it's a good thing. Variety is best, and we should have both extremes and everything in between.

How funny. My wife did exactly the opposite. I had the Magazine sitting on my desk between the monitor and keyboard face up but sideways. My wife sat down in my chair because I was showing her how to check her webmail through our new ISP and lo and behold she just outright flips the magazine over to the back cover. "Why'd you do that?" I asked.

"Because it's gross, I don;t want to look at that."

To each his er rather her own I guess. BTW, I think labeling people as religious conservatives because they disagree with you on the amount of nudity that should be tolerated on a general audience magazine cover is a straw man. You can have beautiful covers with elements of classic fantasy art without showing lots of boobs and butts. It does a great disservice to the industry I think to treat it as a good ol' boys club instead of as a game that can be enjoyed by men, women, boys, girls, or any combination thereof.

I find it kind of embarrasing when my family sees such images on the cover of the magazines I'm reading. I don't mind cheesecake, but I do wish they would put it on the inside and not on the cover. Surely the intelligent people at Paizo can think of another way to grab peoples' attention?

I apologize if this view has already been put forth, I didn't have the heart to read all eight pages.

What kind of covers would I like to see? Take a look at the 'golden age' of Dragon, say from issues 70-120 or so, for an idea. Remember the 'chess' covers? Loved those. I'm not a big Elmore fan, but the Dragons snow-battle cover was nice. How about something to do with an actual adventure, for a change, instead of just some overglorified GQ-esque cover shots? I'm tired of just a picture of someone standing, looking at the 'camera'.

Now this I do agree with. I too remember some of those classic covers (esp the chess ones - I purposedly went out of my way to collect all of them). Portraits are fine but it has been a long time since anything like the chess covers or even that one shown from the inside of an F15 as it fires missles at a dragon (about issue 115? I think.) More variety would be nice.
