Dragon Magazine Collections

I started subscribing with Issue #90 and have kept it up to this day. Before that, I started buying them on the shelves starting with Issue #72 and I think I have almost every issue between #72 and #89, as well as about 20 scattered issues between #41 and #72. I also have the CD-ROM collection of #1 - #250.

I love re-reading the old articles, both from a sense of nostalgia but also when I'm looking for a particular topic. For example, I searched the CD-ROM for articles on African Fantasy before Nyambe came out because I was working on that part of my campaign world.

That might make a neat idea for a Dragon "Best of...". Theme issues. There have been lots of articles over the years on the same topic but handled in a different manner each time. Witches, "exotic" locations (Asia, India, Africa), knights and military orders, etc. Just collect articles on a given topic, going all the way back to Issue #1 (and perhaps also The Strategic Review). Could be in PDF form I guess, but a soft-cover copy would be good, too.

My collection is puny, and covers mainly the later 2e period. The first issue I bought was #217 because it had the random tables for the Encyclopedia Magica about a half a year before the final volume with the master tables and index shipped. I started getting the magazine regularly a few issues later with #222 and with a few small gaps continuing getting the magazine up through issue #283. I bought #315 for the campaign classics theme, but otherwise, I haven't kept up with the magazine in a while.

Oh yeah, if the generator was the one in #251, the name means "Priest of the Arcane." Or something similar, since it was designed to be fairly flexible.

Issue 45 (May 1980) was my first, bought it for the archer class. Months later I was hooked so I ordered back issues to bring me current. So I have #3, #5, and issues 7-265, with sporadic purchases from there on.

I have several of the older ones on my shelf, in the 58 to 70-ish range I think. And I love the Dragon Archive collection CD which is always fun to look back through the older issues. Still lots of good stuff in there.

I started with issue 62, and have not missed an issue since. I can still picture the cover- an armored man on horseback fighting two or three orcs with a forest and a mountain peak behind.

That was an awesome cover! In 8th grade we had a creative writing assignment wherein you had to take a picture from a magazine and write a story about it. I used that picture and wrote a whole series of short stories called "The Cavalier". The teacher loved it!

I have every issue since #124. I'll occassionally go back and look at old issues, but I generally don't get much use out of them. I don't game enough to use a whole lot of resources. As far as I can remember, the only article I've gotten use out of since 3.0 came out is the one on leveled weapons.

I enjoy the magazine (Dungeon, too), I just don't have the time to utilize all the resources at my disposal, particularly while running a "World's Largest Dungeon" campaign.
