Dragonlance Lost Chronicles Canceled ?!?!

I was listening to the live interview of Tracy Hickman and was shocked to learn that WotC has canceled the third book (Dragons of the Hourglass Mage) in the Lost Chronicles series and notified Weis and Hickman that it will not be produced.

I find this to be a travesty. This book fills in the last gap in the classic Dragonlance story and the way WotC has treated the famous authors is a disgrace. You can hear the disgust in Hickman's tone of voice.

Frankly, I'm a little shocked.

Thinks look pretty grim with allegations being tossed back and forth between WotC and Hickman.

Apparently WotC was going to use ghost writers (!!!) to write the final book in the Dragonlance story. That's just crazy.

Werewolf:The Forsaken? Why would WotC want to do anything other than publish Hickman and Weis's last book in the series? That just makes no sense. And writing doesn't run on tap.

There was already a thread on this in the Media Lounge forum. I'll see if I can find it. Edit: I couldn't find it and I don't have access to search.

I would recommend reading this thread on the Dragonlance Forums. It lists Weis and Hickman's initial concerns, WotC's response, and Hickman's reply to that.

Remember that what you've heard is Tracy's point of view. We tried to interview WotC on the Canticle to get their point of view, but they declined. I'm sure they consider it a private business matter, so I'm not surprised.

The ghost writer bit...that has not been confirmed. My guess is that WotC posted some bogus plot on the Amazon site as a placeholder, then they didn't get the release date fixed.

While we're not entirely certain what's going on, don't count this book out yet. Weis and Hickman are still trying to work with WotC to make this book happen. If worst comes to worst, the Dragonlance Nexus will be organizing a fan movement to make this happen. We're just waiting for the right timing.

My advice is to remain calm. If you do contact WotC's customer service, don't do so in anger. Approach them in terms of support of Dragons of the Hourglass Mage being written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman and published by Wizards of the Coast. Only by everyone working together can this book happen. :)

I'm 33 years old and I recently just read my first Dragonlance book (Dragons of Autumn Twilight). Do these books get any better than this? I don't read a huge amount of fantasy literature, so I don't really have a baseline I guess. I have read LOTR and some of George Martin's work. These books are fabulous. Dragons of Autumn Twilight isn't even close to these in terms of quality. I don't want to say that it is a bad book, but it's pretty close. It really isn't good. My question is, do these books get any better than this? If not, I have no interest in spending any more time reading these. Is Dragons of Autumn Twilight typical or is it of lower quality than the others?

They're fun, excellent books, but they're not great literature. If they don't seem to be your cup of tea, I wouldn't bother. Still, I think the first trilogy is worth reading once through, at least.

Well, I think that the first six books do increase in quality. However, if you don't like Autumn Twilight, you probably shouldn't go on with the rest.

I actually found DoAT to be the best of the first trilogy. I haven't read a DL book that was half as good as that one. And I think you liked DoAT more than me....
