Does this power also deal damage to attackers who attack the sorcerer at range? Thought this was a melee only attack but I looked again and it does not say it is only melee, nor goes it give a range.

I would say yes as long as that range attack was against AC. I see nothing that even hints that it is limited to melee AC attacks only.
