Draw Steel General Thread [+]

overgeeked

Open-World Sandbox
The [+] is to keep things positive and prevent the same already tired arguments about Draw Steel, tactical-crunchy play, and the Kickstarter / patreon nonsense. There are plenty of other threads to hate on games and play styles you don’t like.

There are a few people on here who backed Draw Steel and want to talk about it without the constant negativity of the other threads, so I thought we should have a general [+] thread about the game.

If anyone has any useful links related to Draw Steel, please feel free to post them.

I didn't back it, but I've been following Colville's design videos, and any kind of DnD4-reminiscent things are my jam... I'm just waiting to see how the final product has shaped up (and see art, layout, etc) before pulling the trigger.

I'm intrigued by several of the mechanics. I need A LOT more time to read and absorb things though.
Looking forward to your take!

I am curious how different the game ended up being from the initial Patreon packet. I ended up not backing the game for no reason other than my backlog is pretty bad and I figured if people end up hyping it up enough after release I might give it another look down the road.

The art looks very much like their art, if you know it. Actually, more than a few are recycled. I mostly like it.

I thought I liked the layout art first, because it's very clean. But something is missing for me . I'll have to give that more though as I read it.

There are definitely parts of the rules I like! I just need more tin to articulate it well.

I ran some of the earlier packets at a nearby FLGS and we had a blast. Haven't had time to skim or read through the two books/PDFs that came out the other day but looking forward to making some time & saw this

Also enjoyed listening to this at the gym this morning 😀

Im super lucky my group just finished up a campaign and were ready for something new. I will be running the delian tomb next week with the pregens to see how the system plays before we commit to a full campaign.

Just checking the pregens made me hope my group ends up liking it so much I get to play as well.

The wode elf troubadour had me put on Thunderstruck and imagining striking enemies with a literal thunderbolt at the end of every round. 10/10.

I didn't back Draw Steel. At the time of the kickstarter I was pretty firmly convinced that I was strictly a "Theater of the Mind" DM and it would be a poor match. Plus I had just started running a new game with a batch of new players and play-testing a beta game with them didn't seem like a good match either.

With that said, my group and I did end up start using a battlemap and I actually became a fan. Paired with the occasional video Matt dropped on his YT my interest grew in the game.

A guy I play MTG with weekly is at GenCon right now and he was able to score me one of the dice sets/starter kits.. So I'll enjoy seeing if my group wants to try it out.

It's interesting hearing what counts as a campaign for different groups, for mine (if we still played) the Draw Steel version of the Delian Tomb would be a full campaign.
