I don't want to derail the thread, but I don't think that a D&D-style game is appropriate for such endeavors, IMHO.In a D&D-style game, isn't this mostly about the GM's narration? Perhaps in combination with the use of clerical and paladin spells.

Indeed. I was just musing about a game that would actually account for this beliefs being true.Whether there actually is any divine intervention is also far from clear, so one less reason for an actual rule… people believe things without them actually being true all the time
I don't think AD&D is all that good a fit for it. 4e D&D, on the other hand, can be (in my experience).I don't want to derail the thread, but I don't think that a D&D-style game is appropriate for such endeavors, IMHO.
you don’t bring wood to a steel fightWhat if I want to draw wood?
but my wood is harder than steel! ;-)you don’t bring wood to a steel fight
5e hides a lot of it's complexity from players by dumping responsibility for hiding its complexity from players onto the GM, that makes it hard to answer a question like that. For those that have played it is this game more or less complex than 5e?
I think a few phrases like this is a great idea!I've started saying "draw steel!" Instead of "roll for initiative."
