Drinking at the Game Table?

Hobgoblin... oh wait.. that does exist. :heh:

At a certain microbrewery/bar/restaurant in historic Salem Mass, there's Witch City Red and Pumpkinhead Ale.

And at a DIFFERENT microbrewery/bar/restaurant, here in Nashua, they've offered Barrel-rider Stout and Weathertop Ale.

Me, I'm holding out for T.P.K. Lager! ;)

And for some reason, I am compelled to recall Homer Simpson as he attempted to sing "Tubthumper"

"I drink a whiskey drink.
I drink a vodka drink.
And when I have to pee.
I use the kitchen sink!"

I have the same thing happen to me. Back when I used to party a little harder in the late college era I used to be able to head to the bar with friends who were pool hall regulars and about three beers in be able to beat them or give them a challenge in a game of pool. Of course this only lasted for about one beer at which point they would thoroughly trounce me again.

I've had a similiar experiences when playing pool back when I was in the Army. Played great on a few beers, and another few beers later my rhythm was gone.

On to topic:
Yes, we allow drinking during our games. Since my group socializes before and after the session, we've usually started by the time we get to playing and wind down with the drinking as the game progresses.
Well, half the group drinks anyway (not counting any minors who may've joined in for the session). I do and my friend, whose house we play at does as well (to the point of being three sheets to the wind once). Normally it's 3 beers or less and occasionaly a shot or two as well.
One of our players has stomach problems, so doesn't drink, unless to sample a new alcoholic concoction (my friends wife drinks on weekends when her friends are over, which turns out to be most every saturday). Then a third mutual friend in the group rarely drinks, as he readily admits he can't handle alcohol (either turns into a real a**, or starts boo-hooing, neither state being one he enjoys being in).

Do we allow it? Yes.

Why? Our DM demands that she has a vodka cran in hand before playing.

When we used to live within walking distance of the game, the rest of us would usually pass a whiskey bottle but now that we drive, not so much.

They (just who are "they" anyway?) need to come up with a beer for DnD gamers.

Dicenbrau, St. Cuthbert Girl, Flannae's Best...something like that.

I've been thinking of geeky gamer names for some of my homebrews. "Potion of Blur" is one of my favorites. It doesn't make you blurry--it makes everything else blurry.

Thac0hol, potion of delusion, cure light wounds, Beholder Bitter are some others I was thinking of.

In previous group incarnations we would share a case of beer at the game table. No more then three beers each. Nobody would ever get silly or obnoxious. In the current group, we have a couple of people who are a little holier then thou when it comes to alcohol, so to avoid a loooong discussion, the rest of us drink pop.

Why or why not?

Comments/anecdotes?

In the old days we had to enforce a no drinking rules as we had a guy who was great to game with when he was sober...but get a few drinks into him.

Nowadays I have a no drinking rule cause we game at my house, I don't drink and don't want it in my house. I have a rule that if you show up drunk I kick you out.

If I was gaming at someone elses house (which I have in the past) I would follow the rules of that house regarding drinking (I wouldn't adovcate either way). However if the group was getting drunk while gaming I would leave. I come to play not watch others get drunk.

I've always allowed alcohol at games, frequently consume it myself. I've never had any problems with my players getting to drunk or anything. Most of the time it's a bottle of wine or a few beers split amongst the group. However, there has been a time or two when I was actually drunk as the GM...needless to say all the NPCs were just a bit off, but still good fun.

We we allow it.

why? Because we are all adults.

However, we don't drink often, usually once in a while one or two players will bring some beer, but just as often they don't.
