Drinking at the Game Table?

We usually drink beer, about a six-pack or sometimes two depending on how many players are there. I rarely see anyone consume more than 3 beers in an evening, usually more like 1-2.

We tried one session that let people drink - mostly it was an unwritten rule especially since we didn't have any on hand.

It was a relaxed evening, two people had their birthdays that same day - so it was more of a get together. We all got about 1 hour of game in, partly because we then got distracted with other stuff. I don't primarily, but partially relate this to alcohol. We frankly weren't interested in the game and the DM(new to dm-ing), and we didn't appreciate some of the ways he was trying to do things (though different from usual). Not into it.

I don't have a problem with people drinking at my table... drunk is another thing altogether.

>Do you allow alcohol at your games?

Always

>Why or why not?

It's a good way for my players to relax and get into the fun, and we all know how to drink responsibly.

>Comments/anecdotes?

It does require a mature group to handle it responsibly, and as the GM you have to set the standard. It has also made the game more enjoyable for me as a GM. I find I run things a little less lethally after a beer or two.

I don't drink alcohol myself. I've yet to have a player who asked or tried to imbibe while I was GMing, so I've not had to specifically allow or disallow it.

If there's gong to be alcohol, it ought to be in small amounts. I don't think I'd mind someone havign a beer. But getting notably tipsy or drunk at my table would nto be acceptable.

They (just who are "they" anyway?) need to come up with a beer for DnD gamers.

Dicenbrau, St. Cuthbert Girl, Flannae's Best...something like that.

Hobgoblin... oh wait.. that does exist. :heh:

In my regular group, we almost always drink a couple of beers each during a session, and I have no problem with it. In college we sometimes had people get enough of a buzz that it had a slightly adverse affect on the game but it's never a problem these days (we're mostly about 30 years old).

In other groups that I play with, we never have beer, usually just soda and water.

It really doesn't matter to me either way.

This is a phenomenon I call "The Beer Curve". Some skills increase dramatically with the first few beers and then drop off precipitously after a few (or a lot) more. I noticed it first while playing weekly pool games during happy hour. Any activity that becomes easier when you are more relaxed and confident seems to follow The Beer Curve.

I have the same thing happen to me. Back when I used to party a little harder in the late college era I used to be able to head to the bar with friends who were pool hall regulars and about three beers in be able to beat them or give them a challenge in a game of pool. Of course this only lasted for about one beer at which point they would thoroughly trounce me again.
