Dungeon Map Making Program?

DarkJester

First Post
Anyone know any handy (preferably) free dungeon map makers?
Doesn't need to be able to do anything complicated, just lay down walls on a grid and such. I can always add more detail in photoshop.

I was just going to use photoshop (7.0 If anyone can help) but I can't get the line tool to draw a non arrow tipped line.

Use Coreldraw 9 as you can also get Corelphoto with it (it's supposed to be much better than PS from what I hear). Stay away from those silly hex filling programs...
Perhaps Paint Shop Pro from JASC or Canvas from Deneba... definately vector based either way...

I think I pretty much have written exactly what you want.
I have a basic mapping program based on graph paper dungeon maps that can do the following:
1) Lay down walls that "lock" to points on a grid.
2) Lay down doors that lock to walls.
3) Lay down text at any arbitrary point (for either room numbers
or secret doors).
4) Lets you select and delete any element laid down above.
5) Lets you save to a file.
6) Lets you print.

If it sounds good, email me at msemanko@yahoo.com, and I'll send you a copy. (My web site is long gone, so I have nowhere to post it.)

Autorealm is a free mapping program. If you do a Google search for it, you will find a download site. Only probem is that you have to set your monitor to 256 colors for some of the pattern features to work.

Fractal Mapper is a nice program that you can purchase for not too much money. It's very intuitive, and has some nice symbols. Do a Google search to find this product's website. Only problem is that the files are in a proprietary format, so you can't open them in another program, such as Paint or Photoshop. Nor can you post them here.

Campaign Cartographer produces gorgeous maps but the learning curve is quite steep unless you are already experienced w/ CAD. Also, the program is pricey. www.profantasy.com

I use Fractal Mapper most of the time, except for when I draw something freehand, scan it and Photoshop it.

Couldn't agree more. Photoshop maps are pretty, but vector maps are sharp and crisp. Mostly, it comes down to personal preference. Me, I use Illustrator. :)

Their site is www.nbos.com. This is the best program out there in my opinion. Also, don't worry about the proprietary format thing. It can export to BMP and JPG. Then you can edit all you want.

Well dang! I guess I should finish reading the help files, eh? I didn't realize you could export. That takes care of the only complaint I had.

It's worth noting, I think, that I've produced about 6 maps for my campaign using Fractal Mapper, and my players keep oooing and aahhing over how pretty the maps are. Trust me, this is not due to my skill.

Plotting

Can Fractal Mapper use a plotter? I have had trouble with this in the past. I have access to a plotter and would like to output maps on one big sheet rather than having to print 10 pages.
Just wondering if any of you had tried it.
thanks
