Dwarven Defender... 7th level class?

The Souljourner

First Post
So... I'm building a dwarven defender, he's starting at 6th level. I'm thinking probably 6 levels of fighter, then one level of X then Dwarven Defender at 8th. Here's the thing - 7th level fighter is total crap. You might as well take a level of warrior, you'd get more out of it.

Any suggestions about what I should take for 7th level? Or maybe revisions of 6 levels of fighter?

I basically want this guy to be as unkillable as possible. I don't care if he doesn't do tons of damage, just don't die.

Since you already have to be lawful, go for Paladin to get the Divine Grace bonus to your saving throws. With your dwarven resistance to spells, good Dwarven Defender saving throws, bonus to saving throws from Defensive stance, and Divine grace, you will hardly ever fail a saving throw. This way you are impossible to touch with weapons, and will almost never fail a saving throw.

if you have a good Charisma, get a level of Paladin. OR if your Charisma sucks, get a level of Ranger to get Track and 2WF and some skillz.

I built one this way.

Lvl 1 Brb - Rage is sooooo powerful. Fast movement (I wear heavy armor so I don't use it) , 16 skill points including listen, 12 hp instead of 10........ Great benefits… Cleave is powerful early and works great with Rage! Then 6 lvls of fighter... You just have to switch alignments and lose rage when you turn DD (stupid alignment restrictions)

I went the big 2nd weapon ftr (the extra str from rage is massive)... ranger is not bad if you go 2weapon, but as someone mention it will not working in 3.5 and they also will have 8 hp, but 6 skill points. If you happen to have a good charisma (role-playing only), Paladin makes a decent choice.

Go Barbarian for a level. Rage and Fast Movement.

DWARVEN DEFENDER
Hit Die: d12.
Requirements:
• Alignment: Any lawful.
• Race: Dwarf.
• Base Attack Bonus: +7.
• Feats: Dodge, Endurance, Toughness.

Ex-Barbarians: A barbarian who becomes lawful loses the ability to rage and cannot gain more levels as a barbarian. The barbarian retains all the other benefits of the class.

May be worth it for the fast moving though.

I'd probably just take another level of fighter. What is right for the character? Is he a holy crusader for his gods? Then a level of paladin. Was he trained as a Battlerager? Barbarian. Is he a bit of a scout? Ranger.

If none of these fit, just take a level of fighter. You don't have to min/max every last little decision you know. It sucks the soul out of the game.

If you qualify, consider throwing in some Survivor levels. Improved evasion, Uncanny Dodge, all "good" saves, and DR 5/- ... nothing to sneeze at, if you want to be "unkillable" ...

perhaps bard is the answer.

if you get enough skill points together, you can do Inspire Greatness, granting 2d10 temporary HPs, +2 on attacks, and a +1 to fort saves. also, you get your con mod to the temporary HD, very good bonus for DDs.

Also, for taking bard you get +2 will and ref saves, bardic knowledge, and access to some really nice skills, also get some cantrips.
