Dwarven Stronghold - a community effort

As I said in the IR thread, I'm having some major ISP troubles right now, and need to bow out of the project. Happilly though, unlike the IR thread, this one probably won't be finished in a week... meaning I should be able to step back in once I get things all settled up. (Right now I'm at a friend's.) This isn't to sound 'big-headed', I just hate leaving loose ends (like disappearing for a week or so on something I promised I'd work on... :() Ah well.

I'll second that!

Also, the yahoo group is an ideal place to store documents. It can even be set so any member can view it but only the editor and other "mods" can upload or modify.

There's also a database function. If that were mapped to the Table of Contents, down to about 3 levels, it could be used to track who is leading which aspects, for example

I have to admit that I am extremely wary of Yahoo or just about any of those portal/free hosting sites.

I recall that one of the services came up with a "Terms of Service" stating that anything you posted basically became their property giving them the right to use it in any way they saw fit including marketing it and creating derivitive works etc.

Plus I don't like the spam so no I don't Yahoo. I'll read their "TOS" but I don't trust them. There's just something very non-dwarvish about them. lol

That's scary! Yahoo Groups doesn't have popup ads though, and I doubt they are the ones claiming to own anything stored there. I personally have not had issues with Yahoo Groups, probably because Yahoo bought another company and just put their logo on it.

If the idea of having a central storage place for the most current versions of documents is a good one, Yahoo will do it - there may be others I don't know about. The same goes with a checklist of who is coordinating what.

These may not be good ideas, or someone may have a better idea. I do think some means of coordinating items and maintaining documents by latest version, are good ideas though. Wish I'd thought of it.

Wow dis is great!

Do you have any Idea when this will be finished, because I might be able to use it in my new campaign (In some months)

Sorry I can't contribute!

Too much other stuff to do...

I want to help!!

I want to help!! How do I join this group? someone post me a link pleeease?

Mushrooms could be a dwarven staple...mushroom beer, mushroom bread, mushroom soup, mushroom cake :-). Dwarven Mushroom spirits could be in wide demand... For other foods, they could grow them in big fields, lit by the light of great huge lamps (sorta like greenhouse lights on a grand scale). I agree, bulettes would make excellent steeds/beats of burden/organic drillbits and tunnel diggers...only one question: what does bulette meat taste like?

Lava-powered is the way to go!!!

Oh by the way, something from my campaign's dwarven city: Fabulously rich by human standards, tales of dwarven riches are constantly inspiring wars and attempted thievery by the Humans and other surface dwellers, particularly by the adventurers...
The constant wars would make them very insular and isolationist...everyone would have a level or two in fighter.

How about mandatory milittary service? To get full citizenship or whatever, you have to serve so many years in the army...very useful due to constant greed-inspired wars...

The dwarves might be very distrustful of outsiders but trade with them anyway

How I handled this subject, take it as you will

Not meaning to rain on y'all parade or take over the thread but a few years ago I started the daunting task of creating a Drawven city for my campaign and this is what I came up with (all of this is 2e)

Dwarf Hame- A Dwarven strong hold located inside a huge Mesa, the surface entrance is on top of the mesa in a fort occupied by Dwarf, Gnome and hired humans. The bottom of the Mesa has been deeded to Human friends for the trade city of Barter while the flat top of the Mesa has Gnome and Halfling run farms and ranches. To reach the top of the Mesa one has to ride a massive elevator powered by boilers with Steam Mephits inside. Other power needs are met by windmills, waterwheels and aniamated constructs.

Goverment- A councel of elders with full voteing powers backed by a Thane hold of Guilders, Traders and others of renown with half vote power.

Military- Roughly 60 % of the population is in the militia with 15 % ull time members of the Army, Air Guard (Giant Eagle riders) and the Navy (in dirigilbles).

Notable enemies- The Lawfull evil Human kingdom of R'thano to the South, Hobgoblin tribes in the broken lands and Drow in the Underdark.

The rest Magic, Religon etc. is all either 2e or unique to Sunder, but I hope this helps or gives y'all something to ponder

Please, I really hope this isn't the end of this thread. i've been really enjoying it. Isn't anybody going to keep it alive? I have a suggestion - how about having a part of the above-ground area of the stronghold inhabited by resident non-dwarves. Halflings, humans or even gnomes might live near or on top of a dwarven city for benefits of their own (a ready-made consumer base for food and crafts, a ready-made retreat in time of trouble, etc...)

How about it?
