Magen Brigward
Fighter 2

After dinner Magen spent some time outside training Edgar, the homestead rang with the blows of steal on steal. Engrossed in their own fight, Magen didn't notice the drum beats until Lucious and Shara started looking out of the horizon. Magen called a pause to the sparing and walked over to Shara, "They've noticed the missing band, then," she says sedately. "Guess we won't have to look for their leader."

"Well that could be a good thing, if we are out tracking them, they could have the upper hand in a place of their choosing. Perhaps we'll need to fortify this place a little, thought there isn't much time to do anything now. I don't much fancy fighting them in the dark, either out there or here."

OOC: How fortified is the homestead?

GM: The farm house, secondary home, stables are all reinforced wood. The wooden palisade is around 12 feet tall, with a couple of watch towers on each end. All windows and doors facing 'outward' have heavy shutters with bow slits. The palisade has a wooden gate that is barred with two heavy reinforced bars The wood has all been treated so that it would be hard to burn.

It would never survive any kind of siege, but should hold up well against archers and light cavalry like goblin wolf riders. Your biggest concerns would be the ogre and goblins climbing over the walls and sneaking in.

In response, Shara reaches out a hand and touches Magen's shield with one finger. "Lumen," she says quietly, and suddenly the shield gives off a bright light.

"The dark I can help with," she says, looking back at Magen. "But battle and strategy...you know far more of such things." She waves a hand and the light goes out. "Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help prepare."

Hunter Brightwood

Hunter walked over to the others and listened to the drum beats. “I would say that it’s a rather nice melody, that is I would say that if I didn’t know what that sound meant for us, or for these people here.”

Looking around the compound, Hunter felt slightly better the palisade would give them a chance. “We might be able to put something on this side of the gate to reinforce it more, and the palisade will give us cover until they get right up on us. If we can slow their approach we might be able to even the odds some before they make it over the wall or break down the gate.”

Hunter ran his hand over his chin and forced a smile, “And I was about to hit up our hosts for some ale. That’s the thing about these goblins they don’t respect anyone’s after dinner plans.”

"We've brought death to these poor folks' doorstep. We may stand a better chance of survival here than that barn, but we also put more people at risk. Nobody listens to the librarian until it is too late."

"Equally we could have stayed at the old homestead and the raiders could have attacked here, leaving these folk to fend for themselves." Magen replied to Mikkel.

Looking to Hunter he said, "Barricading the gate would be good, I fear there isn't time to lay spikes on the outside not the men or horses to try and raid the approaching goblins." He looks around for a second then continues "But this palisade looks good enough to keep out goblins. My only real concern is that ogre, he could easily lift goblins into the compound or make short work of the gate, perhaps we could set some kind of trap inside. "

Corwin speaks, "I can definitely use the arrow slits to our advantage to strike from hidden positions. I think we need to concentrate our efforts on the ogre, then the leaders."

Hunter Brightwood

As he listen to Magen, Mikkel, Corwin and Luscious Hunter continues to look around the compound. “Death was going to come to this farm sooner or later, perhaps it is best that we fight these beast here, it gives both us and these humble farmers a better chance at survival.”

Hunter stopped for a second and looked at the older man, “I do understand your concern Mikkel, I don’t want these farmers’ deaths on my conscious, and that is why we will not fail here."

“I agree Luscious, we do not know if they come here for sure, but they are traveling with wolves; if they wanted to track us back here I have no doubt they would succeed.” Turning to Magen Hunter continued, “I think Corwin has the right idea about focusing fire on the ogre when he arrives, if you can think of a trap we can set up quickly and still bar the gates I say let’s do it."

As darkness falls the drums continue for about a hour before they fall silent. The rancher Hiddell came out to see the heroes as the sounds of the beating faded, smoking a clay pipe. "Bad business that" he says. "An't never heard them beating drums before. You recoken you gave them a bloody nose and that they be a looking fer ye now?"
