Symbionts are the creations of the daelkyr, the lords of the plane of Xoriat. They are sentient beings that are designed to attach themselves to hosts, and act as weapons and armor for their hosts. Since the end of the Daelkyr War thousands of years ago, symbionts still remain scattered across Eberron. From here.

What's a "Symbiont" magic item???

3.5 had these symbionts that are intelligent magic items that are also creatures created by the Daekyr. Examples include Living Breastplate or Tongueworm (yes, a worm that sits on your tongue and can give you a poisonous stinger attack).
