ECL question

Hi,

Just need to confirm a few things about creatures with ECL.

I'm currently building a half-ogre/half-troll fighter 6. Total ECL: +5. So it's a 11th level character.

Starting money: get as much as an 11th level character. Correct ?

Stats increase: are those only based on class levels ? If so he get one.

Feats: I assume it's only based on class level so 3 levels feats + 4 bonus fighter feats = 7 feats. Correct ?

Skills: I also assume that max ranks are based on class level. Correct ?

Am I forgetting something ?

Perfect. ECL is only used for XP (both how much you need to get to next level and how much you receive from a fight) and starting money. Everything else is determined using hitdice + class levels (often abbreviated to just "hitdice" or just "level").

Hit dice and ECL

On a related note (sorry to co-opt yopur thread Yig) if a creature type has hit dice does that count automatically as having levels in addition to the creatures ECL? I am thinking specifically of the Janni, which has an ECL of +5 and starts with 6 hit dice; is it an 11th level creature before you add any PC levels to it? If so it is VERY underpowered. Just about any 11th level PC could kick it's butt.

Be careful of your acronyms. Janni have a *level adjustment*of +5. They have 6 hitdice, which means they have an ECL of 11 (ECL = level adjustment + hitidice + class levels). So, yes, you're right.

And yes, you're right, in a one on one fight, a Janni would lose to most standard 11th level characters. However, the Janni has a lot of very useful abilities that can make up for that.... they do get a crapload of good stat adjustments, plus telepathy within 100' (even though it isn't explained anywhere)... plus their 6 hitdice have fighter BAB, monk saves, and rogue skillpoints. That's damn good.

I do think that the designers tend to err a little too far on the side of caution with most level adjustments... but that's just my opinion.
