Elder brains and illithid-kin!

I just ran the fight against my version of the elder brain last night. It had a ton of guardians and stuff and the party beat it easily (they had previously determined what it was they had to fight and scried it out; it knew they were coming but they knew they had to deal with the pool, etc. I feel comfortable with it as a CR 14 monster based on the encounter- as I said earlier, my version has a little tougher psionics but not quite the AC or hp (close enough on balance, though).

LOL allright, i'll re-evalute it when i finally get back into looking at this thing. ;) CR is a weird funky concept anyway. really hard to measure and keep it accurate. it'll probably go under 20, but i doubt i'll put it as low as 14. we'll see. ;)

There is one thing I wonder about the set up against the elder brain. Why in hades didn't the elder brain anti scrying defenses up at all times? I mean, this is a creature who has the combined knowledge of hundreds, perhaps even thousands of illithids. It should know that a potential enemy would try to use divinations against ít to get the upper hand, shouldn't it? Actually shouldnt the entire mind flayer community be protected against divinations, especially considering the average intelligence level of mind flayers is in the genious category?

It just doesn't make sense.

Oh, well, I'm rambling here. I don't know all the facts, so I probalby shouldn't rant... :D

Yeah, as a master plotter, the Elder Brain could use Remote View :) (no Scry  ) and have the Remote View Trap power.

Scrying on an elder brain could be hazardous to the mage's health :D

psi, i decided to give up on what i was doing with the elder brain, and go with your idea of giving it "levels" of psionics, a la the solar's "cleric levels" of spells. just too damned much work to do it the way i wanted to, and have it done right. i'll have it done soon, and soon posted in a brand new thread. the other illithid monsters will stay the way they are, for the most part.

Boz: I suggest that you give it at least the same psionic powers as a regular illithid (Astral Projection, Charm Monster, Detect Toughts, Levitate, Planeshift, and Suggestion) useable at will. It is a collection of illithid brains after all. You might also want to give it a few more innate psionic abilities (Metaconcert for example). This of course should be in addition to the innate psionisist levels.
Although it is only a suggestion :D
