*blink*

Why all the assumptions that someone wanting to play an older PC is trying to be a munchkin? What happened to things like "Hey, I've got this nifty character concept..."?

The only place I've ever heard of the aging rules used is in the CO boards... (Edit: frequently the munchkining aspect is using the aging modifiers in conjunction with a method to completely ignore the physical penalties.)

Ah.

Hence my comment above about not applying said rules if it's a starting character. Allows for a full range of character concepts without all the BS. :)

I've done this a couple of times in D&D games - one of my favorite characters of all time was a Victorian England campaign where my PC was a retired English Army Major, in his mid-forties. Straight up fighter (we used Mouseferatu's stat method, IIRC - no age mods). He was a blast to play, displaying all the old British Empire superiority married with a pretty profound ignorance of the world around him. And insulting the French. Always insulting the French.

I've played an older magister, but it became clear really quickly that I was wayyy too powerful (due to being a 6th-level magister built for AU's uber version of fireball, not to being older).

In an online Ravenloft game I'm currently in, my character is middle-aged (36). It's not for munchkin purposes, its because my concept was a grizzled undead hunter who's been there and done that but now finds himself in Ravenloft where the undead are not like what he's used to and not as straightforward to destroy (Damned Turn Resistance.. grumble, grumble).

In retrospect I probably should not have done it since the reduced physical stats make him not that great in combat (I'm a Ranger 2/Cleric 4 who dual-wields a mace and a handaxe) and the game turns out to be mostly combat, but it's still fun.

How often do you play (or get asked to play) elder PCs? Do PCs ever get very old in-game? Do they age naturally or due to some magical means? Do you use stat adjustments for age?
yes. i've played older PCs. and in campaigns i've refereed some PCs got old. both naturally and magically. yes, stats get adjusted for age.
