D&D 5E Elf Subrace Survey Up

You're claiming 95% of players min/max those stats?

I disagree. I like my fighter-types to both engage well in melee, and also have a decent shot at ranged attacks when necessary. It would be pretty rare for me to dump both as a fighter-type.

You can have both with only one of str or dex high.

For str you have your melee attack and thrown weapons.

For dex you have finesse and ranged weapons.

You can have any stat at any level for roleplay/character ideas(I usually never play character below 12 int, as I do not want to be in metagame area when I have a good idea, but my character is a drooling idiot), but for pure mechanics you do not need both str and dex high to be combat effective.

I gave them flying colors in the feedback.

I am especially in favor of adding new (sub)races with striking powers that are not commonly available at 1st level and on a permanent basis: flight, waterbreathing, teleportation.

This sort of abilities can really add value to a game, if the DM is willing to accept the burden of possible complications to adventure design. If she is not willing, she just needs not to allow a race that looks problematic.

I'd rather have new wacky races to opt in/out, instead of getting more and more races which are just a bunch of bonus proficiencies and advantages.

Why?

If you are attacking with str, you most probably have heavy armor and no use of dex.

If you are attacking with dex you are in light(no) armor and have no use of str.

Except as a skill usage bonus.
Players of barbarians and strength rangers might like to have good scores in both. I know mine do. I like my fighters to have decent strength and dexterity and I can't believe that I'm in the 5% that like good scores in both. I wouldn't be surprised if most players just play the game and don't min/max as mush as the players on these boards.

The signature of champions.

Well, so do I. But I do not need to if I didn't want to. From character back story reasons.

I'm saying that +2 str and +2 dex are weaker in mechanics than +2 str and +2 con, or +2 dex and +2 wis.

Grugach are wild elves(in FR).

They should get +2 str instead of +1. +1 str on +2 dex means almost nothing as they are mutually exclusive stats in prime-dump combo 95% of the time.
Unless you're playing a Barbarian. Or maybe Ranger.
What sort of classes would Wild elves tend to take?

The reason the Grugach Elf needs +2 Strength is because of flavor.

The Grugach is *STRONG* and that is the flavor.
"Strong" isn't a flavour, its a description, and a rather basic one at that. They may look like Half-Orcs, but even Half-Orcs have a lot more flavour than that.

A Race doesn't exist in a world because STRONG. It exists because it has a society and place distinctly separate from others of its kind.

What sort of classes would Wild elves tend to take?

Wild elf: primary; barbarian, druid, ranger. Secondary; rogue, sorcerer.

for all those classes +1 con would probably fit better(mechanics wise) instead of +2 str or +2 dex.

It would be weird for me to be a heavy armor wearing Strength user and not drop Dex to 8 or 10. Thrown weapons are better.

If I'm wearing medium armor, like a Barbarian, then sure, Dex 14 makes sense.

It is almost as if min-maxing isn't something the designers are concerned with overmuch...

You can have both with only one of str or dex high.

For str you have your melee attack and thrown weapons.

Almost no thrown weapons can reach the dragon flying far higher than my thrown weapon range. Nope, sorry, not a good plan in my experience.

For dex you have finesse and ranged weapons.

Sure, I just prefer big swords or polearms with the feats tailored to them.

Sorry, I just don't think it's nearly as common as "95%" who dump both stats for melee types.

Then you will also die in a pool of mush as the dragon fries you. Almost zero thrown weapons have adequate range for a huge swath of dangerous challenges. Particularly in the wild wilderness where you most often find....wild elves. "Fred, what are you doing trying to throw a hand axe at that Wyvern, it's way too far away for that?" "It's all I have Ralph, even though our society favors longbows I couldn't hit the broad side of the Tarrasque with one!"
