The max value for x = d4 + b (0<b<8)

No, x is limited to less than or equal to 8. b is not limited and could very well be 50. This is a very minor and subtle difference, but exists nonetheless. The importance of it is at the heart of the confusing wording in the spell description. This difference was retained as (apparently) a benefit for mirror image whereas it should have been, IMO, made to conform to all other spells (i.e. a bonus with a maximum like 1d4+1/3CL, max +4).

And if the text indeed says that x (1d4 + b) have a max of 8.. then empower wouldn't make more than 8.. that correct... but Weather or not the text says that is a term of definition...

May i remind you that the spell i written like magic missile under the Spell list short text notice

Magic missile. 1d4 +1 damage; +1 missile/two levels above 1st (max 5)
Mirror Image. Creates decoy duplicates of you (1d4 + 1/tree levels, max 8)

So though the text description is cryptic.. i would stick to my interpretation as it is clearly supported by the short description under the wizard spell list.

The text says that because it actually uses the word total, as in "maximum eight images total." In all other cases, e.g. cure light wounds, the bonus is limited explicitly. Not in this case.

I say that you get [(1d4+b) (max 8)] * 1.5 for a total max of 12 images. The spell is limited to 8 (still variable, even when maxed out), but that does not limit the metamagic.

Images = Min(8, (1d4+n))

Empower changest this to Images = Min(8, ((1d4+n)*1.5))

Note: The Faq ruling I'm extrapolating from here deals with using Extend on the Vigor spells which have a Maximum Duration clause.
