Enterprise 05-05-04

Just came from lunch with a friend that ranted how bad this one was...saying it does not even look like they are trying to do a good job is story and plot.

Just the overall concept. The next-generation crew (heh,) prevented the Enterprise from going into the past, which means that they never became the next-generation crew, which means they never existed to prevent the first-generation crew from going into the past, which means they did go into the past, which means...GIR's head explodes.

I figured that might be it after a little more thought.

But just because they went back in time doesn't mean they couldn't coexist...it would just be a big causality loop which they managed to escape in the first attempt. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Well, there were a few things I liked about it. The old T'Pol makeup was actually convincing; the "son" character was cast excellent, visually looking like Tripp; and I actually thought that many of the interactions between characters seemed real this time rather than forced. Still, if the shows is cancelled I won't cry.

Don't encourage them! We'll only get more time-frickin'-travel episodes!

;)

Indeed, I thought they pulled off old T'Pol quite well and Lorien was well cast. As for time travel, sometimes it's necessary, but with all of the TCW stuff going on, they should save some of these type plots for another show. Still thought it was a decent ep.

I think they are doing all of the time stuff because they are limited on the amount of technology they can introduce, which has always been the alternative to time when it comes to physical manifestations of plot devices.

If they weren't doing time travel they could always fall back on the old hat of ANOTHER nameless and failing show, kryptonite. Personally I think the 'ensemble cast' needs expanding, and they need to kick this crappy story arc to the ground so that we can be introduced to the 'smaller so more personal' crew.

Speaking of smaller and more personal though, wasn't one of the members of the future Enterprise the dead girl from the week before? The one Tripp was writing Dear Dead Parents letters to?

I really liked Lorien as a character. It was pretty cool how obsessed he was with saving Earth even though he'd never been there and was pretty far removed from it. Also it was interesting how he sorta resented T'pol and suspected her of not caring much about Earth. The rest of the descendent crew seemed pretty underwhelming but that's expected I guess, overall I liked this episode quite a bit.
