Seems familiar, but I can't quite put my finger on what this seems like...

I dunno.

I didn't mind it, but it seems like they're always running into hostile aliens that never want to wait...

Yeah, and this one sits as a strong reminder - don't pay any attention to the "Next week on..." blurbs at the end. They make 'em intentionally misleading

Boy, that sure was a fast-acting virus! And to not only rearrange the victim's physical structure, but to pretty much erase the victim's memories, implant a knowledge of the new species' language and apparently an entire racial memory as well! Those guys don't mess around!

Still, it was good to see Hoshi get to do something besides open channels, download Xindi databases, and translate stuff. I liked the look of the aliens (well, except for the Beatle wigs ) - specifically, those toadish deals at the base of the throat, and the noises they made with them. Good job on "alien body language," too - once infected, Archer, Hoshi, and Reed did a really good job "acting alien." All in all, not a bad episode.

Anybody notice that it was Geordi LaForge behind the camera again this time around?

I know! Even Kim from the Voyager episode Favorite Son slowly went through it. But whatever...

I agree. They certainly convinced me. The only one who I could recognize was Malcolm, but even then...

Not great, not terrible.

I'm not seeing much that's really "new" in the putative new direction of the series. "New to Star Trek" but done to death everywhere else is not very new.

Scenes of ships approaching Enterprise in orbit were neat...the composition of those shots reminded me of Star Wars (say what you want about the series as a whole, but Lucas is great at making ships in orbit look huge, and getting the trajectory of other ships just right--LeVar was all over it last night).

What was up with "Prepare to be boarded" and then cut to the guy standing in sick bay? Hel-lo...space marines?

It seemed pretty clear to me. Trip stated, in no uncertain terms, that an attempt to board by force would end in a fight, but having somoene come over to talk was acceptable. Since there was no fight, I think it safe to assume that they decided to take Trip's alternative. I'll pardon them for skipping the details of the negotations after that, as they would have been boring.
