There are two kinds of teams, which we can exemplify using the X-Men and the Justice League.
The X-Men are built to be a team. They usually have complimentary abilities, and they emphasize teamwork (just look at the iconic Fastball Special). Sometimes team members go off on their own, but that's the exception rather than the rule.
The Justice League are (mostly) primarily solo heroes. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Aquaman all have their own things to do, have their own supporting cast and rogues' galleries, and join up to step things up a notch. But even when teaming up, they usually do their own things, even if they do it in a common direction.
3e and 5e have tended more toward the Justice League direction. There is a bit of teamwork with things like Bardic Inspiration and buff spells, but primarily everyone is contributing their own best effort separately toward a common goal.
4e was more on the X-Men side of things, with heavy emphasis on teamwork, such as using forced movement to put enemies in positions where allies would get advantages when attacking them or be in convenient locations for AOE.
