Epic Feats for Epic Monsters Question

I think I understand for feats/epic feats work for regular races. But what about epic monsters.

For example the Leshay has 3 epic feats and 21 regular feats.

Does anyone know how they got this number. There was a dragon article a while ago that showed the feats for different monster types based on their hit dice.

Also if you had a Leshay Fighter 3 would the feat gained from level (not the 2 fighter bonus feats) be epic or non-epic.

The Leshay is a 50 HD fey creature.

According to Dragon 276 (the monster article..which you can download from my site, BTW) fey creatures receive 1 + Int bonus in feats (+1 per four EHD).

So, the leshay gets 12 feats right off the bat (1 + Int bonus of 11).

To this it also gets +1 per 4 EHD. Medium-size fey have base 1d6 HD, so the Leshay has +49 EHD. Divide by 4 leaves 12. So, the Leshay gets 12 more feats.

So: 12 feats + 12 more feats = 24 feats.

The Leshay should have 24 feats.

You can find the formula for monster feats in the SRD or the MM.

A Leshay Fighter 3 could take his first and thidr level feats as epic feats, but not his fighter bonus feats from 1st and 2nd level (as he is not an "Epic Fighter."

Scott, that was a great analysis and from the info up top it looks like they did this right. You say they should have 24 feats and it has 24 feats. But the bigger question I think is how many of those 24 feats should be reguliar and how many epic. In the above example we see 21 reguliar and 3 epic. Any idea how they came up with that division?

The Leshay is ECL 32 and according to page 25 (at the bottom) of the ELH (where it mentions "this rule overrides/replaces the rule in the MM", your class levels stack with your ECL to determine effective class level (for progressions).

So, a Leshay fighter 3rd level, is a 35th-level character and is eligible to select an epic feat (not the fighter bonus feats, but an epic feat for overall character level).

Hmm- good question. Well, according to page 25 in the ELH a monster's level is equal to its ECL + class levels. The base Leshay has no class levels, so is therefore an ECL 32 monster (because the chart on page 156 says so) or a 32nd level character.

A character of 32nd level is eligible for up to 4 epic feats, so I am guessing they just gave it three epic and one non-epic as you can select non-epic or epic either one when you level up (and are 21st level or higher).
