Epic meat shie... fighter advice

First Post
Alright, got to start off by saying I've created a epic level character once, so I've got a rather large gaping hole in my experience in doing this. As a matter of fact I think I've only created one or two characters beyond level 15 in my entire history of playing D&D.

Anyways, I went and created my first character for a epic game, level 21 to start with. He... is pure crap. I decided to try something new and took the Spellsword PRC from the Complete books. I don't remember what my exact layout was, but it was somewhere around Fighter 2/Warmage 4/Spellsword 5/Eldritch Knight 10. Part of my problem is I'm not a powergamer and I was trying to find a melee character that could do several hundred points of damage in a single hit (via the Spellsword's ability). Actually succeded (or at least will have success in a couple of levels) but I can't stand the fact that my total hps (even with a few toughness feats, including the epic toughness and some con improvement) is 174. Yeah, even at 21 something looks at me wrong and I die. On top of that, he's really just a one trick pony.

In the off chance I can somehow get my character killed I'd like to have a backup in the works. So, I came here looking for ideas. Since this is epic level, I don't want to even think of magic (If it wasn't for the Warmage class severely limiting my spellbook, I wouldn't have even went down the Spellsword route). I'd like to go for a monk type if I can make it work, otherwise the idea I've been toying with is a meat shield/support fighter or barbarian, someone who can take a massive amount of damage. Might not be able to dish out damage, but that doesn't matter what I'm using trip and disarm to leave you open for the guy who does deal damage and the wizard.

Edit: Oh yeah, WOTC material only, Forgotten Realms, and the only books I've got, personally, are the three core and the 3.5 complete books.

Well, Con boosts first off.

What I'd do is look at some of the Epic Fighter feats and try to make a character around that. There's an epic version of Monkey Grip and an Epic Greater Two-Weapon Fighting.

What kind of monsters does your GM like to run?

Haven't really been playing with him long enough to get a good answer to that. Although he does enjoy playing magic characters over anything else, so there may be a relation there.

Plus, I don't want to build a character around a feat or two, if I was going to drill down like that, at most I'd go with is building a character around a specific weapon.

Well, I was thinking more for a Fighter I guess. Monks are very good at high levels, but mostly against humainoids or medium creatures. The Fighter is stronger against other creatures, I think, and I'm a fan of the TWF builds (which is why I mentioned the epic feat).

Regardless, I'd go for the Sense Weakness feat in Draconomicon. It'll probably come in really handy more than a few times. Especially if you play a Monk.

Are you making another 21st level character or what?

Yeah, making a whole new level 21 character (well, level 22 actually, but going off the base of level 21 because that's what we started the campaign as)
