EQ RPG: It's Your World Now...

Its a bullet

There are numerous items which I just find amussing and Ironic about this idea, and about some of the reaction so far.

1) People saying that it is a bad idea to take a computer game based off of DnD and turn it into a Table Top game based off of DnD.

2) In the link above, it stated "based off the 3rd edition of a popular game system." We assume its DnD, but at no point do they come out and say this. Maybe it is just Mark Rein*Haggen thinking he can write a better game the Johnathan Tweet, again. 8*)

3) Open Gaming license use. This is fun, they can say they are using the Open Gaming license, but they might not own the system, (if they use WotC's d20 system), and they don't own the intellectual property rights to Norrath. So Even if they say it is an Open Game, they are not the ones who own the licences.

I just see this as Yet Another Campaign World. Though at least one that at least half a millon people have experienced at one time or another.

Dude, of course it is talking about 3rd Ed. D&D.

3rd-edition rules of the world's most popular fantasy tabletop roleplaying system.
...
All the races from dark elf to the lizardmen iksar to the catmen Vah Shir. Hundreds of spells, skills, feats, equipment and more are packed into this hardcover volume.

I think that makes it pretty clear what they're refering to.

all sheep in scotland are black

From the statement were as sure as we can be that it is DnD as we can be without them saying it. So we are almost 100% sure.

The thing to note is that at this point this new game is NOT DnD 3rd edition but would be compatable with it. So my guess is that the system they are planing to present will have a lot in common, but also alot which will be different. Like not having 20 levels of a character class. (This is a guess, used only to illustrate my point)

Anyway....I don't see how this can be bad for WotC at all. It will introduce more people into table top gaming which is good for all companies.

I agree. The worst this can do is increase the fan base. That's an "everybody wins" scenario.

Really, I can't see how they can recreate the EQ experience.

What about the dungeons full of campers?

What about the k3wL d00dz shouting for everyone to hear?

Will you be able to go on eBay and buy that magic sword you've always wanted?

Does the GM have to say the same thing over and over when the players talk to an NPC?

Will players be able to take their characters to to other games, so that they can level up faster than their friends?

Is WW going to put out an errata sheet every couple of weeks that buffs or nerfs rules in the game?

If the GM can't make the game for a given session, is there a place on the net where the players can meet to whine and swear like sailors?

How's the GM going to like playing as spiders and bats for the first few levels?

Will your friends mind if you play in your underwear?

This is fun. Anyone have anymore? :D

Will you regularly fall through the bottom of seemingly-solid elevators made of trees?

I've had some bad experiences, mostly frustrating, with Evercrack.

Intriguing....

I love the EQ world...it really struck me as a nicely done setting including many of the "goodies" I'd like to include in a world.

BUT, I absolutely LOATHE the MMORPG gameplay experience (hack, slash, repeat). If you find it fun, good for you, but I need a bit more plot and playability before I get to 30th level if you're gonna keep my interest.

So I might pick it up...EQ definately has some cool ideas.

That said, I still think somebody should try to talk with Squaresoft and get the rights for an OGL or d20 Final Fantasy. Much cooler, IMHO. And while the FFRPG is decent, and the FFd20 fan site is cool (...if I do say so myself. ;)), it's not exactly like having the hardback right there.

Anyhoo, that's what I think. If they can make EQ a viable world, I'll like it. Otherwise, I'm going to have to take a pass...what I DON'T need is 15 levels of hacking regenerating monsters before I get to do anything interesting.

I have always suspected when reading interviews with the EQ designers that they wanted a huge backstory and definite feel to Norrath that I think the game and the players of the game just didn't really support. I wouldn't be surprised to see a big difference in this product and the "real" EQ... I really hope so because anything like an actual EQ session would be miserable from a tabletop perspective.
