Even Newer(er) Tavern Thread: The Hanged Man

The door to the tavern is opened by a man dressed in the uniform of a Daunton soldier. He places his back against the door to hold it open and offers his hands to a much more frail pair. He practically has to help pull the man past the threshold. You immediately recognize the man either through personal contact or through his reputation. But he is none other than Gunther Brunt, Mayor of Daunton. His disease has progressed and it is clear that his reign will soon come to an end.

When the soldier moves to fetch a chair, Mayor Brunt waves a feeble hand at the soldier and slowly shuffles over to the chair, determined to sit on it under his own power. Some of his atrophied muscles quiver from the effort of trying to balance himself and he nearly falls as he tries to sit. The soldier is quick to place and hand under his shoulder to steady the Mayor. Mayor Brunt sighs but does not fight the soldiers help any longer. He is resigned to the frailty of his condition.

Mayor Brunt clears his throat and slowly forms his words in a raspy voice. He has to stop after every few words to catch his breath.

"I need the h... help of a fe... few men and w... w... women of adv... venture. Come... if you are... free."

OOC: I'm planning to run the published adventure Madness at Gardmore Abbey. I'd like to take 5 PCs of levels 5-7, but will consider other levels if I can't fill the party with the target level.

Young boy glides into the chair next to the elder, bowing deeply before seating himself.
"My name is Drew Lucan of the Dragon Temple. I'm free to help you."

His youth makes him look less adventurous then his confident demeanor, serious gaze and not little magical equipment bellies that assumption. Only his eagerness shows his years, but the body is still, maybe too still, under iron control of his will.

The door swings open and a kobold slumps in. He’s tall for his species, and definitely dressed as an adventurer--and even a rather fancy one at that, with his scale armor lacquered a beautiful midnight green--but his posture is meek and furtive, and at the moment he appears thoroughly absorbed in feeling sorry for himself. He leaps up on a bench, his oversized backpack crashing noisily to the ground, and, facing outward rather than inward, leans back against the edge of the table with his feet dangling. “Ohhhhh,” he sighs miserably, and then looks around in some embarrassment, this dramatic exhalation apparently having come out a great deal louder than he was intending.

[sblock=ooc]Papolstaanas is being slightly revamped (minor stuff--I’m updating his racial abilities and changing his starting equipment). Presently he is a level 7 avenger|battlemind.

If you’re not familiar with Papolstaanas, you can read his introduction (warning: it’s long. But I’m rather proud of it).[/sblock]

Lerrick, upon seeing the mayor in his current condition, closes her eyes for a brief moment, then opens them again. Her eyes now a bright silver, flicker as she mumbles words quietly to herself. The mayor feels strength and healing warmth spread through his body, temporarily easing his pain. Lerrick is saddened however, knowing that she's powerless to cure him. The silver eyes now change slowly back to emerald green.

ooc: lvl 8 cleric available if not enough characters in lvl 5-7

Behind the major, slow tapping approaches and pale arm feels around the table for the moment before an elderly elf steps in the view. His eyes are glazed over and white all over as he blindly finds his way to the chair.

"I will help. I'm in for any and all exotic adventures that include searching for exotic cures for obvious reasons." he touches his eyes.

"Do not worry, I'm blind long enough that it is no hindrance. Except of course when I have to take care not to harm anyone, like here."
His head swivels slightly between seated old man (focusing on his wheezing) and the soldier (his movements causing audible whispers as his armor and clothing slide over one another).

OOC: Chaos sorcerer, blind as a bat and full of not-so-friendly area effects - I hope you have good defenses, melee types :p

An elf girl with long black hair, an oaken staff, and very revealing brown clothes meanders into the tavern. Her long ears twitch, and then she focuses her gaze on Mayor Brunt and prances over to him as if strolling through a garden. She speaks to him excitedly, either not noticing or caring about his frail condition.

"Oh, hi there! I thought I heard someone say 'adventure.' Was that you? Was it? Cause I'm free now, and I'm all yours! Eva, wizard, at your service."

OOC: Eva is a level 6 necromancer.

Mayor Brunt looks up at Lerrick.

"Thank you."

But the slight smile on his face quickly fades as he lets out a sigh of resignation.

"I have all but given up a search for a cure for myself. Soon I will have my affairs in order and Daunton will have a new Mayor. My need is not related to my condition, but more of a personal favor."

The mayor reaches into a pocket and pulls out an ornate card made of ivory, parcel-gilt with silver along the border. Symbols in dark pigments are drawn on one side. The mayor flips over the card and the face is engraved with a masterfully lifelike image of a female knight. In one hand she holds her helmet, revealing an olive-skinned face covered in dirt. Her brown hair is cropped short. In front of her is a kite shield emblazoned with a crest, gules, chevron or, three caltrops two and one, or.

"I believe Lady Oakley might be interested in seeing this and I would like to take it to her and find out more about it, but I am too weak to make the two-day journey myself. It is too dangerous to send a messenger as a tribe of orcs has moved into the hills around Lady Oakley's lands, and a recent outbreak of disease through the soldiers quarters has left us with barely enough soldiers to patrol the city. Thus I am in need of help. I hope you would consider the request favorably even though it is not typically worthy of men and women of your prowess. I am willing to pay handsomely in order to have my curiosity satisfied. I don't have much need for the gold."

"I don't have need for gold either, favor of The Mayor would be enough, but since you will not be mayor for long, by your own words, I will take it. If you would be so kind and let me use some healing lore you maybe have access to, I'd be more then happy without gold." somewhat callously comments blind elf.
